I don't think anyone can argue against that maxim. However, I store rice and pasta, both in original packaging and in Mylar, I don't particularly like either food stuff and don't them day to day. The reason I store them is that they are long life (especially in Mylar) and they are cheap. If needs be they will be filling and, I'm sure, appetising.
I also have a supply of instant mashed potato, which I don't like either, but, again, will fill me up if needs be.
I don't use tinned veg, but keep those too.
I draw the line at storing Fray Bentos tinned pies though
As a bit of fun, anyone else storing stuff they wouldn't normally use?
Store What You Eat, Eat What You Store, the reverse!
Re: Store What You Eat, Eat What You Store, the reverse!
If you get a good deal on an item, then yes buy it in bulk. This will build stores up quicker. At the end if the day if you're hungry, you'll eat it. If its got as long date, then eat it last!
You can always add spices to your items, adjust the flavours. The only problem is rotation. You wouldn't necessarily rotate it.
Its just one of those of things, agree or disagree?

We live in a unsustainable world, there must be a balance, poor people/rich people no more, only prepared people will make it!

...this is probably quite common amongst the prepper community - I have a few months of long term canned food most of which my family and I would eat if things took a turn for the worst. However, day to day, as the world is now - there's only a very slim chance I would eat this canned food.
The way we live today is pretty much the polar opposite of a prepper - fresh food, nothing processed and regular trips to the shops...for me, like many, this is a problem but it's good to know that we would be good, I think, for a while if things went awry...the adage store what you eat etc doesn't apply...
Hmmmmm - after lurking for a long time and this being my first post I really should head over to the new members sections and make an introduction

I don't store nearly enough food, but what I do is only ever stuff that we eat now. It is all fairly well rotated. That being said we probably only have around a months supply. For me, I enjoy the peace of mind that if money is tight one week I am not struggling for a weekly shop.

Eating fresh food, especially if you've grown it yourself, is just another facet of being a prepper. Being able to provide for your family, not just using the food you have stored.tringo wrote:

Please don't take this the wrong way,but if you do not particularly like rice and pasta now, I don't see how it will be appetising if there is nothing else. Much has been written by food aid agencies/military/disaster relief etc. about appetite fatigue amongst refugees. Especially children.Reservior wrote:I don't think anyone can argue against that maxim. If you do not like canned food-really do not like it- why store it?

Havnt taken you the wrong way Jansman.
I understand completely what you are saying and it could be considered sensible advice. However, I look at it slightly differently.
Take tinned veg for example, carrots out of tin, bar the colour and shape bear no relation in taste or texture to a fresh one. However, those carrots still contain some of the goodness found in vegetables, so for me, worth storing and eating, if I have nothing else.
Pasta and rice will fill me up, I might not enjoy eating it but I still see a 'value' in having it available to me.
I'm certainly not going to stop prepping because my current meals suggest that I should

I love tinned carrots. And tinned peas. Marrowfat, processed, giant peas. I think it's because I had them a lot as a child. Which is bizarrre, because my family had a huge allotment and we grew EVERYTHING (well, everything that you grew in the UK in the early 70s!) Guess I was a faddy eater!
