rehydration and electrolytes

Post by munchh »

I have had the missfortune today of needing to go and by dioralyte today (not an overconsumption thing a bad chineese for my birthday).

So it got me thinking about these electrolyte powders i hear alot of talk about.

Where do you get them in single servings. i have only seen packs to make jug fulls?

Also dioralyte is so nasty and expencive for the 6 servings at just under £5!

Anyone found a good supplier?

Don't use dioralyte! Way, way too expensive. Check out own brand stuff at a supermarket pharmacy, or at boots. For a dirty cheap version, use ordinary granulated sugar and table salt, both *well* diluted. Don't know the correct proportions, sorry.

PS - and poor you, on your birthday!!!! Hope it was good before that happened.

we also did a similar thing in the army.. 6 teaspoons of sugar then add salt until you can just taste it. worked a treat.. the boots/tesco own brand is just as good.. there is also stuff called peadialite which is also very good.. as long as you are fit and hydrated it is unlikely to make much difference but a few for if you get D&V are always very handy

the best ever advice i got from the works nurse was ,were i used to work . flat coke and ready salted crisps . gives you the salt and glucose you need , it all so gives you some thing to throw up if needs be .

add a cup of orange juice to that mix of sugar and salt.

take a multivitamin - might be a good way of keeping nutrients stocked up

Orange juice should need a lot less sugar.to be honest though if you keep hydrated it first place electtrolites are not essential. It is usually easier to drink than to rehydrate. Mixes like these are only for if you really cannot drink enough or loosing it faster than going in.

It is worth reading the wikipedia page on oral rehydration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_rehydration_therapy

The original idea was actually a double ended spoon. One large scoop for sugar and one tiny scoop for salt to be added to 1 litre of water.

the mix has changed recently as you can see but the idea remains the same.
