working it out?
working it out?
how do you work out how long your food store's will last if u had to live off just them not taken in to count what you can forage.

What do you mean?Anarchyedge wrote:how do you work out how long your food store's will last if u had to live off just them not taken in to count what you can forage.
If you're talking tins then they stay good even after there expiration date, I had soup last year which expired in 2006 and it was still okay.
Re: working it out?
if you mean calories ,
look on the tin or packet , its all the there .
i`m not certain of the calorific intake you need but i seem to remember 1200 for a not very active man . by not very active , i mean if you were to bug in and keep a low profile You would need less calories than if you were , say planting a veggy patch or walking .

YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .
Re: working it out?
I think what you mean is how long will your stores last if that was your only source of food, and how much longer will it last if you supplement it with what you can forage right?
Well its hard to say as not every body eats the same amount but here's a suggestion ,why don't you try and live 1 week of your preppes taking note of everything you consume and that will give you a rough guide to how long you can last on what you have
as for foraging well it depends were you live and what time of year it is, right now with all the snow theirs not a lot to forage ,but try the same experiment try going out for a few hours a day and see what you can find

Re: working it out?
Note down what you use in one week at current consumption e.g. with OH- 1/2 kg rice, 2 chickens, box of cereal, a loaf, 1/3 tub of butter (then into grams), salt, toothpaste, bog roll, etc...
Then when you have idea of what rate you're using everything you can see how your prep holds up. Obviously we're more wasteful when resources are plentiful but it's best to plan as if you're keeping up with the current rate so you know the minimum it'll last

This is very basic and American but will give you an idea of how much you need for your family size.

havent looked at preppingsu calculator yest - but the basics are there.unsure wrote:if you mean calories ,

need between 1200 and 2000 kcals per day, work out how many in each 100gm of food you have and size of tins/packets etc.
then its all simple maths from there.
have read quite a few times that below 1200 is potentially harmful amount so have a look around at how much you need and what you might be doing...
the more you expend (climbing, sprintiing, wood chopping etc) the more you need obviously the more sedate you are, the less you need. sorry to beso basic
edit: oooh nice calculator tool
