Hello
I've been checking over stores, and had an idea I'd like to share, which does work for small amounts of tinned food:
Take a pair of old, preferably thick, winter tights that would be thrown away.
Cut in half leaving two legs, don't cut off the bit up to the waist.
Put your tins in, single file, newest stock at the bottom (toe) end. Oldest, i.e. stuff you need to eat first, at the top.
Manouvere this under your bed (careful, it's wobbly and heavy), once you can slide it under the bed it stays in a row.
Use the waist band as a handle, and hey presto, organised storage for no outlay apart from the tights original usage. It also utilises the space better, as I can line these up side by side and no gaps.
I've managed 8 medium sized tins per leg e.g. 340g tins of creamed rice pudding, although they do stretch, anymore would be a weight issue.
I can see whats in there by pulling the first tin forward as tights are semi-transparent, but, once pushed back and covered by bed throw they can't be seen.
I had loose tins under the bed which were a pain to reach, and check dates, now they are all in date order, and on my stock sheet list by item, quantity, weight, expiry date.
For the blokes out there, ask permission first, before raiding the tights drawer! Single men can buy tights - just say they are handy for keeping warm when fishing if you are embarassed. This is true, having known a fisherman, apparently they are a cheap alternative to thermals.

That they are, tights have many a uses that ordinary people would overlook.
As with the can storage idea i shall have a look, i think it would be simliar to a way of storing onions that i have seen.

You might try cutting the toes off, then putting a freezer clip over the hole & taking from the "foot end" this way you take the oldest out first

You could make the following out of scrap pallets, or some MDF.

This reminds me so much of being in the riot vans (lots of waiting about), all the chaps (and I) were wearing tights under our gear - kept us toasty warm!
So next time you see a van full of coppers, let your imagination go wild!
