Zombie apocalypse! & diabetes...

Post by 24942895 »

I had a friend over today, one of three I'm keeping in mind in my prepping, she went to get herself a paracetamol and found alot more than a box or two, "holy cap, are you preparing for the zombie apocalypse?!", yea, kinda...

As well as her meds for a nuked thyroid she's just been diagnosed with diabetes, it's time to have a more long-term chat about her medical needs and probably prepping in general, maybe I'll make a pair of foil hats for the occasion...

Diabetes is a lifestyle disease.
Some doctors will tell you it is incurable, some will tell you it is curable. (mine is one)
Diet has a big role to play.
There is a great documentary about some people in America who can cure type 2 diabetes purely through diet.
Type 1 is a lot harder but not impossible.
Tell your friend to do some due dilligence, her life might depend on it.
After the SHTF people who need regular medicine are going to be screwed as supplies run out.

Be lucky (and informed)

Biggest problem might be her reliance on thyroxine, research required when I have the time. Thanks for the input.

if you can balance type 2 with diet , how could you balance the opposite , in my case its low blood sugar , the doc says just have a handfull of jelly baby`s or glass of coke when i need to . really anything with lots of glucose or sugar .
i have lots of tinned fruit in syrup but when that runs out i Think i`d be in trouble
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Hi, I have been diagnosed with Familial combined hyperlipidemia in 2009, they find out when I had 2 pancreatitis with 3 months of each other and the second attack severely damaged my pancreas (need a transplant now) and the cause of that was to have now diabetes so when peoples say that diabetes is a lifestyle illness....well not always and not always possible to "cure" with diet.
As we all know diabetes is high level off sugar so when so peoples have a very bad diet combined with no activity at all I agree that a change of diet and lifestyle can help a lot. In my case my pancreas do not produce insulin so without my daily injections no diet or lifestyle change can help altough my diet and lifestyle changed a lot.

So in case of zombie apocalypse I'll be pretty much in trouble as it is hard to get the GP to prescribe a lot of the stuff and stock pile...looking at the bright side, zombies will have some nice and sweet meat to eat ;) ;)

@unsure: I don't know about the jelly baby so wont comment on that but I can give you a couples of tips

1) Unlike you GP (surprisingly!) advised the best drink for you when you are low in sugar is Lugozade, they carry cases of the stuff at the diabetes clinic in guy's hospital and was advised to keep some in my fridge as they act fast (rather than any other drink...) when I first started to use insulin and had few hypo.

2) Ask your GPs to give you a prescription for "GlucoGel" if they are a bit reluctant (with all the cuts!) explain that it is not always possible for you to access/carry Coke, like when you go hiking or camping. This gel come in a small bottle, half the size of a cigarette box and is a fast acting dextrose gel. You can also buy it at your local chemist for around £5 per bottle.

Last month I read One Second After http://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Second-Afte ... cond+after by William R. Forstchen, about a EMP pulse knocking out all the power in the USA.

All in all I quite enjoyed it and one of the main storylines in it was about him trying to keep his Diabetic (Type 1) daughter alive.

Five days ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, :( strange how it goes, weird coincidence or what
