OK so I've been stockpiling and rotating food for a while, and I've got about 1 years cache of ASDA smart price corned beef hidden away. (approx 150 cans). I use about 3 cans a week (I make a large pie/pasty once a week using 2-3 tins which does 2 family evening meals, and lunch at work for 2 days).
I wasn't worried when I found out it was corned horse (as its still meat), but today the media are saying that it now contains equine painkillers.
There is no alternative product on the shelf at the moment (for a realistic price), so I would loose not only my cache, but also my weekly pie/pasty.
What would you do in my position...
- Keep it and think to yourself (its just painkillers, and only small quantities)?
- Take it back and hope they don't ask too many questions as to how I have all these cans?
- Something else...

After all, possibly a few small doses of horse painkillers isn't gonna hurt & it'll be cheap now

I'd probably keep it. But it's depends what that "painkillers" are if you even know. If it was Phenylbutazone (Bute) then I'd be inclined get rid just because Bute can cause god knows what problems in humans. And even though its small quantities you'll still have the Bioaccumulation of the drug in your system which in later life could have have detrimental affects to yours and anyone else who eats said meat.

I would be inclined to return it - like you say - it's not the horse meat issue, but the Bute issue!
I think that given it constitutes 4 of your meals per week (and 4 for the rest of your family), it is quite a staple in your household. You need to be able to trust anything which you consume regularly.
As for Asda asking questions - how you come to have so many is your business! It could be that you cook for an organisation / group for all they know.
As they are obliged to refund you, while losing your years stock you will have an injection of cash. While not being able to replace it with as many cans as before , you can certainly buy a substantial amount of a slightly higher quality.

Asda a may not have a comparable product but how about another supermarkets budget brand? I'd take them all down for a refund and restock (as fully as possible, grab an employee and see about some full trays from the stock room) from Tesco or similar.

Radio 2 had a bit on this today an apparently you would have to consume a considerable amount, much more than would be expected to be consumed to be affected by the bute. Now they didn't say exactly what that considerable amount would be but it does sound as if you eat it a bit more regularly than me and I am opting to return mine. I have a few dozen tins and I'm taking them back tonight so will let you know about the experience 
albeit that I expect a few odd looks, it's going back primarily because I don't know if a considerable amount would result from cumulative consumption.

As BMK said , you would have to eat a huge amount to actually get a single full dose of Bute , but Bute after all is just horse Ibuprofen , i should know ive got two horses on and off it for various injuries, and not once have we had to fill in the passport , stating it has been given it .

I would return it.
1) Just because there was a low level in the cans tested, doesn't mean there will be a low level in any other cans.
2) Bute was, originally, developed as a drug for humans, to use with folks who have arthritis. They stopped using it because of side effects.
3) Just because most people would have to eat lots to be affected, it doesn't follow that everyone would. Think allergies. Not everyone has them, but those who do can be severely, even terminally, affected. I know someone who could die if exposed to the amount of penicillin that fits on a pin head. He's so badly affected that he's had himself tattooed with this information at the usual locations that medics use canulas/give injections, just to be sure!

OK, just back and got a refund no probs.
