Cayenne pepper should be in everyone's first aid kit. If you have a severe cut which is bleeding profusely, apply cayenne pepper, a powerful styptic, directly into the wound. The cayenne will equalize the blood pressure and start the coagulating of blood immediately. It is a powerful disinfectant so there is no need to worry about infection setting in.

Cayenne Pere as a cloting agent

Re: Cayenne Pere as a cloting agent
Interesting! I don't get it though ... I googled the phrase, and lots of people are recommending it as a clotting agent, and an equal number of people are recommending it as a blood flow stimulant. I'm not attaching any links, because the point is the *number* of links that came up in the search, and I don't know which to trust.
Do we have any science-based folk on here who actually *know* whats what with cayenne, because it sounds great!

Two problems with special clotting agents clotting dressings.
Firstly PRICE!. They are expensive.
Second you need to know the do's and don't s . Some must not be used on chest wounds . Each one has its limitations.

Simple first aid advice for bleeding is keep pressure on it. you need to keep pressure on for a long time. I had a test a while back where they put a line into a big artery, I was warned they have to press on the wound for never less than 10 up to 30 minutes afterwards.
Remember the old Doctor in the house joke where the surgeon says to the student "what's the bleeding time" and gets the answer "quarter to four sir" . Blood takes several minutes to clot so the real answer is some where between 5 and 10 minutes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_time) .
