Air Bunker

Post by jacob1 »

This is something I've been researching and I haven't come across a definitive answer. I was wondering, if i was to build an underground bunker using a shipping container, have a hatch with a ladder at the top. As well as that have it sitting half in the ground and half above and then pile it up with dirt to look like a natural hill and make some sort of fake grass block which can be removed to show the top hatch, there would then be a total of around 50cm of dirt max from the half way up point covering the container. My worry is, how would i get fresh, clean air and make it blend in with the natural surroundings? What kind of filtration device would I require ect. P.S , this basic underground bunker, I've worked out building in a plot of land owned by some close relatives will cost around £2000. Which is around £800 for the shipping container, and then £1200 for any extra necessities or deliveries/transportation.

Depends if you want it just for storage or for a NBC shelter, if the latter; there is not enough cover to make it radiation proof.

Going off your opening post:

I'd invest that £2000 in good equipment and food /water supplies.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Yeah the money isn't guaranteed yet, its a future plan, but as you said, i do need to invest into foods and other preps. :)
by the way this will be used as a temporary safehouse and a secondary storage area if it does get made.

the 1980s civil defence leaflet produced by the UK Government still has useful advice link http://www.atomica.co.uk/main.htm
The shelter document can be found at this Link http://www.atomica.co.uk/shelters/main.htm

You are not going to get a decent ISO Container for 800 quid. For what you want look at spending £2K on a one journey (these are classified as new) ISO. Also once you start cutting hatches into it, you are going to reduce its structural rigidity, which will be really important once you start adding several hundred tons of earth to partially bury it. Don't get me wrong, ISO's are multi faceted assets. I know, because I live in one. Well, more an ex-military mobile communications post - its smaller than an ISO, but the principle is the same.

Oh god here we go again , Shipping containers are useless as bunkers as the roofs are NON LOAD BEARING , all the structural support are in the four corner pillars and the floor ,the walls and roof are just fillers to save the stuff falling out .

Use the search function all the details are there

PLEASE DO NOT BURY SHIPPING CONTAINERS

If you want a full spec NBC filtration system (inc blast valves) you need to opt for one by Andair or Temet. Budget around £5000 - £7000 for the kit.

If you want a budget option go for something similar to:

The hot air principle works. I've installed something similar but am not convinced about the air traps catching NBC nasties. Can't see how that could work to be honest.......

Thanks for all the help
from all that information I think I have seriously underestimated the amount of work, money and also the safety elements off it.

I have decided to stick to storing stuff in my bed and in the double plastic home outside.

I built an underground store (root cellar) out of a shipping container last year , reinforced it with scaffolding poles it works a treat with over a foot of soil covering it, the thing is o worked it out as costing me around £2000 it ended up costing a fair bit more mainly because I forgot about drainage, which ended up adding another £800 to the final cost once done I decided to line it with timber which added to the cost including that and shelving it cost around £4000 twice what I thought it would , so beware unless you really need it I would not bother
