OK rather than chase our tales on self defence let's do a new one on how to avoid things getting that far with deterrence or detection, barbed wire, dogs, alarms, low profile, anything which reduces your chances of being a victim or encourages a would be attacker to flee rather than continue.
Like my self defence train of thought my concerns are for things which can't or a less likely to be turned against us, not getting snared by your own trap so to speak.
Any thoughts?

Legal security agaianst intruders, burglars, or attack.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: Legal security agaianst intruders, burglars, or attack.
i don`t think theres really any way to make your self look less of a target .
that said i have a couple of camera`s ,one front on show and one at the back [hidden ] the house alarm ,
couple of security lights as well . all of which are use less with out power.
our molly [gsd ] is very vocal when she wants to be , she`s not an attacking kind of dog but the way she jumps up to greet visitors you would think she was

YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Hi,
A few ideas :
- CCTV cameras are good and can be fairly cheap nowadays. Provides an element of deterrence and gives you a way to quickly check what is happening around your property (particularly at night - cameras with built in IR emitters are very effective). Doesn't work without electricity of course.
- Security alarm on your house.
- Geese as guard dogs - I've heard are surprisingly effective as an early warning that someone is on your property.
- Barbed wire / razor wire on fences or walls around the property. Trouble is this won't look very nice - and erecting a 12 ft razor wire fence around your house might get you in trouble with planning. It did occur to me that I might buy all the gear needed for a big mental fence and store it away until the collapse of civilization - but it was going to be quite expensive and I haven't been able to justify it so far.
- trip wires attached to blank shotgun cartridge - ie something like this. You would set trip wires around your property such that anyone trying to sneak up at night would set one off. This would sound like a shotgun being fired which would alert you and probably make the would be attacker run away. This would be more for TSHTF scenarios - but I wonder if there are any legal issues around using those before then?

You've got to balance things imo.....
If you go out to make your house look like a bank vault you might as well put a big neon sign saying something like "i have lots of valuable stuff in here"
likewise making it look too easy will also invite someone to have a go for easy pickings...
Look at the houses around you and try to look like them but more secure but not over the top..
Next doors shed has a small padlock .. you put a bigger one on and a stronger hasp..and better hinges...
Next door has no security lighting... Put a light up.......
Next door has a burglar alarm... Get a fancier bell box put on yours (i can tell at a glance looking at several brands of bell boxes if the system is actually in working order from ground level i know one neighbors system is no longer powered at all.
And the other side which is a contact system has lapses as the decals are the firms old one, which they replace when they service it for example so no longer monitored,) So you can almost be certain if they are lax on the alarm system other security will also be poor
Keep your garden in trim so the house it can be seen from the road if next doors is a jungle it makes it easy to break in unseen
Gravel driveways are noisy to walk on...
Spiky shrubs along the fence line jump over into that they wont hang about
We had one neighbor come round about three weeks ago saying someone had tried to break in to theirs over night but they hadn't bargained on "Rover" going mental at the door they were trying to force..
No one came anywhere near our house the CCTV proved that
In a shtf situations alarm systems could be run for days off a car/ leisure battery for example with a bit of wire and a small amount of savvy same with a CCTV system or the battery in the alarm panel could be run off its internal battery and the battery charged up from a car alternator

Andy said most of what i was thinking
FYI shotgun blank firing trip wires are legal and can be bought without a SGC, but as with any booby trap you are liable for any injures caused.
Another product I like is anti shatter window film. It doesn't work very well if retro fitted but on a new pane sealed into place it is very effective at keeping people out and doesn't create much mess.
With regards alarms. British Gas have a system which is great value for money and at £350 ish fully fitted its upsetting our local security firms. We just had one fitted and in comparison to our old alarm its very sophisticated. We can control it from our phones (app), and over the internet. The list of additional sensors shocked us. central heating control, light control, Flood warning sensors, Co2 detectors, heat sensors etc etc..Technology its amazing
CCTV- we fitted the 8 camera swann system from macro. £300ish and you can set it to motion sensing. When activated it will email you pics.

I work in the security industry and oftern visit houses that have been broken into
One very cheap idea I oftern tell people go buy a big dog lives here sign to go on the gate they may not know if you have a dog or not

You can buy "fake" cctv cameras with flashing lights, realistic looking for £3. Fitt them high, change batteries when you need to, get cctv in operation sticker on window too! Overall cost is less than a tenner!
Re: Legal security agaianst intruders, burglars, or attack.
I have the Swann camera system, it's the DVR8-1200 system with cameras that work in the dark & as mentioned connects to the internet & informs you via your smartphone when activated, its very good & works well but relies on power & so only useful while the utilities are in operation.
I have some of the trip wire alarms posted by delard which are loud but you must be very careful where you position them, they can be activated by all the neighbour hood cats if your not careful or even the odd greedy & dumb wood pigeons as they fight over mates in the spring, certainly gets your & their attention anyway.
Since I was broken into last I have been improving security & Im looking at some kind of cross bar system to secure the front door which I can insert while I'm inside the house, no good for when the house is unattended though.
Be good to hear what others have done.
