Sheffield groups

Post by lewis555 »

Hi I'm new to all this I'm just wondering if there is a local group in Sheffield so that I can pick there brains and learn new skills. Books are good but doing it for real with hands on experience is much better

What sort of real, hands on experience do you need?

Storing food and water is just that - really doesn't need a group of people to tell you how to do it.

Emergency first aid - do a course with St Johns Ambulance.

Growing and preserving food - join an allotment society or a TransitionTown group. People full of knowledge.

I suppose it really depends on what you are prepping for too?

The thing is I don't really know what to prep for. Food and water is the most important but I'm more thinking on the lines of security for my family. So number one what am I prepping for???? When I say this I mean what's the most likely bad thing to happen in the UK. Floods don't bother me I live at the top of the hill. the thing is I do feel that something bad is going to happen but I don't know what. And second is how to make my home secure for my family.

As a new member your first 10 posts have to be moderated. Any posts made in the new members section don't count towards that first 10. The moderating team are all voluntary members who have other lives outside of this forum so sometimes it may take a few minutes or hours for the posts to be moderated.

What to prep for?

Quite a few of us prep for redundancy/unemployment (and a few members will testify how they used their preps when that happened).
Ill health - could you manage if you broke you leg/ were long term sick? Preps help with that.
Bad weather- you know how the UK grinds to a halt at the first snowflake and bread and milk are stripped form the shelves. Don't be one of those people panicking buying, have your own stock.
Power cuts - we've all had them and if the news is anything to go by  we may have rolling power cuts as we run short on fuel as a country.

Not many of us prep for a shtf moment portrayed by Hollywood in the film 2012 or The Day After Tomorrow ( although I'm sure we've all thought about them  ).

So don't panic, start slowly - food, water, alternative lighting and cooking equipment (heating is something to consider) and build your preps from there.

As for my job I work in funerals so please no zombies  thanks for the info. Food and water I'm good with but I need a good torch and candles. Heat is going to be a problem if there is no power.

This is nothing to do with prep. I was on call for people that sadly pass away in the night and I stupidly watch world war z. Not the brightest of moves to be honest  I pood my self when my on call phone went off. So no more zombie please.
