A big part of survival is in the general fitness of it's practitioner, hence the "survival of the fittest" phraseology generally banded about. I personally am preparing for natural disaster over anything else such as flooding/fire/snow/storms however I will be ensuring I am in good physical condition should I have to combat or work in such scenarios and environments.
I was wondering how many people are preparing fitness wise and if it is generally geared towards your idea of what your SHTF moment is or if you are generally blanket training to be generally fit.

Re: Fitness for 2014
With a new job comes free gym membership! So i will be taking full advantage of that. I would like to be able to complete a BFT without passing out, which i think is achievable. Then to pop into a TA center and inquire there about joining, obviously the fitness would make a big difference.
I think as modern life gets easier with internet shopping and parking no more than 200 mts from the shops, general fitness has dropped. Obviously going back years and years, there is no need for the human race to march from Rome to England then fight for land anymore so the general fitness and size of humans has dropped massively. A shame in my opinion but it depends where your sitting i guess.

Re: Fitness for 2014
Funny you should start this thread as I was thinking about general fitness too. I have started to exercise for 5-10 mins every morning, using a combination of the warm ups we do with our kids at school for indoor athletics and the exercises my daughter does at her Tae Kwon Do sessions. I am lucky enough to be able to walk to work, my local school, but of course during the Christmas hols I wasn't doing this walking so today when I walked to school I was aware of using muscles I haven't used for 2 and half weeks!
It does amaze me tho how many get into the habit of driving to the local shop rather than walking when its only a 10 min walk, and how people don't even think of walking down to their town. Town centre for me is a 2mile walk and yes it's uphill on the way back but as long as I can make the time and its not peeing down, then I will walk it. I used to walk with my kids - its only now that they are older and teenagers that they pull a face at the idea of walking to town (Ok for my weekly shop I drive at is 3.5 miles there and I can't physically carry all that stuff back!) Anyways that prattle was just to say walk places when you can - does you good

Re: Fitness for 2014
I generally look to try and balance strength and stamina, lots of resistance work at the gym followed by cardio and walking my dogs. I think if SHTF then I'll hope that by mixing it up I'll be able to keep ahead of the rest.
Re: Fitness for 2014
There is a bigger one I would like to bring your attention to, its a question of health later in life. If I am pushing 40 at the moment (which to me is actually quite frightening), then I had better think about heart health and bone density later in life (like when I am 50, 60, 70, 80 or stopping working and being of pensionable age by 150 LOL)

Re: Fitness for 2014
Nick I'm forty...errm....two (I had to count...... It doesn't seem like five minutes since my thirtieth )
I've got the same blood pressure reading as I had the last time it was measured.....Fifteen years ago
So, my quack is really happy with my heart, not so much with the weight though.
Because I'm older then you, I get to retire at 148

Re: Fitness for 2014
I was going to start a thread like this myself.
I wondered how many people were prepping their own bodies. Prepping is just good common sense, ensuring that should disaster strike you can look after yourself and your family.
However it's far FAR more likely that you will contract heart disease, cancer or one of the thousands of other nasties that a full blown SHTF scenario, and all the Bug Out Bags, food stores, water sources in the world won't save your bum.
So are people prepping themselves as much as they are their gear? because I think it's a far more pressing issue imo.
I've been trying to get fit for a couple of years and have done reletively well, I ran the Leeds Half Marathon a couple of times, but I want to get properly fit and sort my diet out. I've started doing P90X which is a fantastic home fitness program. But it is brutal, it's not a get fit quick scheme, because frankly, those don't exist.
I think the most beneficial part of the program is the Yoga dvd. I always thought it was for old ladies, but damn, it's really hard, but you definately feel the benefits right off the bat.

Re: Fitness for 2014
All,
I'm starting to crack on a bit now but if I'm completely honest the gym bores the living daylights out of me. One thing I've started doing is Airsoft, great way to get in some exercise in and it's great running around shooting your mates for a laugh. From a couple of hours to a day, it just flies by and it doesn't feel like you're working out.
Can cost a bit to get going but once you start its very addictive.
Illucypher.
