Is there a wrong way????

Post by damaralenoire »

Ok...... so this is what i want to get your honest opinion on..

I have been a member on this site and another online site for the past few months (preferring this site as I believe you guys are a lot more helpful in your advice giving)

About a month ago i was chatting online to a group of fellow preppers about what we have recently bought, the conversation turned sour when one bloke in particular told me i was missing the point of prepping and that i was going about things all wrong after we discussed what bargains we had bought that day.

I mentioned that i had purchased that day 10 boxes of stuffing mix for 15p each, 10 tins of sardines in tomatoes for 30p each and 10 bags of instant mash at 12p each. I also mentioned that i am not really fussed on the taste of sardines but due to the long shelf life and the fact they are a good sauce of protein they will suffice.

This one person in particular , in politer terms, refereed to me as retarded, asking Where the f**k you think you will get the water from to make up the mash, Why the f**k would you buy stuffing mix, Why the f**k would you buy food you dont eat?

Yes i know a cardinal rule is dont buy what you dont like, however i feel that if the time calls i will eat whatever i need to eat to survive plus because of the price i felt it was not a major loss. With regards to water I have a lot of water stored but also if i have no access to water then i simply wont eat the food. I am prepping for multiple scenarios, the main scenario for me is loss of income. I have been told that the shop where i work will be shutting down by end of the year. So i will still have access to water, fingers crossed. And the reason why i bought stuffing mix is because i actually do like stuffing sandwiches with ham and it also helps bulk out your meal etc. If i have lot of tinned ham why not have some stuffing to go with it.

I am thinking of my own survival..... what is wrong with what i am doing?

Short answer is No. We are all preparing for our own circumstances but we share the common denominator of preparing in itself.

Nope, you are doing nothing wrong.

Time to move on if they treat you and others like that.

Like you stated if the SHTF properly then people will be eating anything.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I've experimented with noodles and tinned soups/meatballs/tomatoes, why not stuffing, fluid can be an issue yes, but we can't all store half a swimming pools worth of water can we? plus what water we can store also has a shelf life generally, if we had to base our preps around having the required amount of water for the foods/ washing/drinking on site for the amount of days we had other provisions for, most of us including your "friend" would be screwed.
The only wrong ways I can think of is becoming a marauder, and doing nothing to prepare for unforeseen events.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I can't fault what you have bought.

And anyone who criticises a prep for needing water needs to look hard and long at what they need, number three on the list ought to be water. Having none to cook with is a serious problem.

In the past i have used the water from tinned carrots and peas in springwater etc and used that to make up my instant mash, the water is generally salted so the instant mash doesnt need any flavouring, just like in the past when camping i have used the water from the tinned food added bisto granules to make a gravy up.

I dunno, its kinda knocked me back thinking am i actually going to be as prepared as i want to be . It seems all the efforts i go through come accross as very amateurish and i get fed up of people beating on me.

How many preppers store rice and oats? im guessing we are expexted to eat them raw then is we dont have water lol

Wasrit a certain US based forum with the word Survivalist in it?

I stopped using that because of the awful attitudes on there (and because I was referred to as "lefty scum" by one of the members.)

Put simply, if I see a bargain I'm having it! I'm still working my way through 5kg of bulgur wheat which ive never used in my life before if found it for 50p a kilo. Heh heh!

There is no right and wrong way to prep

Ive got a few fray bentos pies in my preps.. Someone i was talking to told me i wouldnt be able to cook them.. I know otherwise

As for mash you could do a few things with it,, make fried hash browns, Dollop with a pie, make a Shepard/ cottage pie

same with stuffing mix obviously good with chicken, make savourie pasties add to sausage meat to make sausage rolls.. or add to a bit of mash again for a bit of variety

even if you have to add water your still taking in fluids in the food you have re hydrated... and in a SHTF your probably going to be boiling water anyway to make safe to drink.... if you have a fire going your not wasting anymore effort boiling a bit more to heat/ reconstitute your food...
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

I've met plenty of people who seem to need to constantly pull other people down,
for most of these sad buggers it's all they can do to shore up their broken little ego

I mean lets just say for a minute you have just gone out and wasted a whopping £6 on 'stupid stuff'...

What's it matter to him?

Unless he genuinely cared about you and wanted to help you make better choices,
but from how you've described his little outburst that clearly isn't the case.

He just wanted to make you feel small and doubt yourself.....what a shithead.

Now if you'd wanted to have some fun back, ask him what he's bought today
