I have Labrador's they would eat me out of house and home , bark at strangers and would make a great curry or stew , would kill me to do it , but at 32kgs each that's a lot of meat .

Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.
Waay back in the early 80's up 'til the mid 90's I kept a team of hunting dogs. Lurchers and terriers. There is NOTHING I did not hunt with them. Deer, foxes , rabbits, badgers (when still legal), hares and even feral cats. Trouble is, they are not an efficient way to aquire prey.
However, as guard dogs...
I had a mean collie lurcher who not only was a good hunter, but also a brilliant (and nasty) guard dog.
Moving on to now, we have our terrier. He is one yapper. A real 'radar', that hears people before they even knock the door. He is also very sensitive to smoke, better than a smoke alarm, I can tell you. Only need to get the frying pan out and he starts yapping and running 'twixt kitchen and alarm!
I think he is what Wesley Rawles calls a 'Force Multiplier'.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
