Re: Pemmican

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but don't knock pemmican until you try it! I made some basic pemmican yesterday. Dehydrated some beef until it got to the jerky stage... then kept going! The stuff was rock hard after a few more hours, snapping like a twig. I bunged it into a blender and it sounded l...

Re: freeze dried meat

Not based in the UK but you can get stuff from Germany. Have tried neither the website nor the goods myself though, sorry.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

Re: Energy Gel

Yeah honey is great because it already is fructose and glucose. However, my concoction includes BCAA - and, after my initial tests, you can really taste it in there, I have to up the amount of sugars to mask it. This has a knock-on effect with the agar not gelling properly, so might have to try some...

Energy Gel

After a long hike over the Pentlands recently, I've discovered that hills are my dark nemesis and for several days afterwards it felt as if my body was rejecting my skeleton. Decided maybe there's something to those awful little packets you see in camping shops but, bloody nora, I'm not made of mone...

Re: powdered milk

Buy wholefoods online sell skimmed and whole milk up to 25kg sized bags http://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/milk-powder . I bought a 5kg bag of whole milk a few months ago, tastes fine (will never taste like fresh milk tho) and isn't clumping yet. I bought the whole milk because I believe you can m...

Re: Easiest alcohol to make?

My first foray into brewing was making mead, which is simplicity itself... just honey, water and cider yeast.

I also tried making 'apocalypse wine' from a bag of out-of-date raisins. It had one redeeming quality.

Re: Erm... Pot Noodles!

Amazon sell yumyum noodle bricks in boxes of 30 for £8. As far as my research goes they are authentic Thai instant noodles and also very popular in Denmark and The Netherlands. I'm fond of koka noodles but the yumyum brand are absolutely amazing! The sachet in the beef version is like plasticine (it...

Re: The Encyclopedia of Country Living Paperback

Back to Basics is a cracking book. Its about half the size of a coffee table book, and full of useful information. Its an interesting read with plenty of pics and photos and diagrams so it makes it a decent introduction to homesteading/off grid living, especially for the newbie or non-converted. Far...

Re: General public wholesalers ?

That Approved Food website looks great! It seems that it sells items approaching or beyond their 'best before' date, which is only an guesstimate by the product manufacturers as to the when the quality of their food starts to drop off, and its usually down to flavour and nutrition starting to fade. ...
