I would endorse Wulfshead's comment re putting a better antenna on the Baofeng. Any improvement in an antenna is reciprocal for both transmit and receive - i.e. it will improve both whereas increasing transmit power won't do much to improve your ability to receive the other station!

Sorry - that should have been RNLI of course - the lifeboats. That would be for confidential traffic near to shore and in range of land-based mobile phone towers.

As Hamradioop says, the "Blue Light" organIzations currently use the TETRA system on UHF (400MHz) which cannot be monitored with normal scanners. However, just to make life more interesting they will shortly be migrating to use the commercial 4G network - the same as your mobile phone -whi...
