New to the Board

Post by keithb »

Good evening -
I have just joined the discussion board although I have been mildly interested in prepping for a while.

My location is - shall we say - north of Watford Gap and just leave it at that!

I do have a bug-out bag ready to go, with 3 days' worth of clothing, food, cooking facilities and utensils, and personal hygiene items including - of course - a toilet roll!! I worked overseas for a while and encountered a couple of situations where abnormal weather conditions dictated having to live for several days in very cold temperatures with no electricity, heat, or other "comforts of home" so I hope to be reasonably well prepared in the event of some disaster. Others at my place of work laugh when I tell them what I have in my prep bag, but I'd rather be prepared and not need it than be scrambling at the last minute to get something together....

Personally I don't subscribe to the "Zombie Apocalypse" theory - my thoughts are more that there may be severe weather or some other natural or even man-made catastrophe such as a failure at a nuclear site that may require an immediate evacuation - at least if I can be self-sufficient for three days then the authorities can concentrate on others while I take care of myself.

I have a ham radio license with both base and portable stations for short-wave as well as VHF. They are optimised now for more UK-centric coverage than for chasing overseas stations ("Been there - done that - got the T-shirt") as I think that it would be more useful to communicate with other stations in Great Britain than to exchange weather information with someone in Kazakhstan!

...and with that, I'll sign off for now and watch a TV documentary on severe weather....

Regards,
Keithb

Welcome..

I don't tell work mates what I do .. Its always fun when something disastrous happens such as some twunt in a JCB hits the water main to the site and no one can have a brew ... ( small 500ml bottles of water in the car = I get a brew but there's not enough for all ;) ( after several took the piss when I put 3x2l of water in the cabin when we lost water shortly after I started there...)

And when some crop sprayer tangled into the power lines near by and we lost power..... I took "my" kettle to the site next door who have a big generator.... The looks as I walked about with my steaming cup didn't go down well ;)
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'll look forward to joining in some discussions. Maybe I can impart some info too, having been in a couple of situations where I had to be self-reliant due to severe weather -both very cold and very hot!
Regards,
Keith
