Re: Daily Routine Extreme Snow in situation

Wouldn't affect me in the slightest if it snowed. I don't have to get to work and I'm off-grid. I think a spell of heavy snow would have me leaving home with an ice axe and finding some gullies to climb up. :) That said, 2010 winter was pretty grim. I was living in a shanty hut made out of timber, n...

Re: freeze dried foods

Slightly off topic perhaps, but I did a bit of work work a designer that led an advertising campaign for Mountain House. Since he needed product to photo, he got a LOAD of examples, which I managed to get my hands on at the end of the project. I have no connection to the company, or really the funds...

Re: Extreme preppary on the high seas

That's great! I definitely encourage you to investigate fully if it takes your fancy. I hope my comments on the inland waterways weren't taken too negatively. It's not that bad, just comparatively bureaucratic compared to offshore boating. I've spent a little bit of time on the canals and it's an ut...

Re: Extreme preppary on the high seas

In fact, you can see the very moment I learned to sail thanks to an old youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEsA1aoVh1A 3:46 is a few seconds of my first boat. I lived on it for four years (tiny, ain't she), and that is very literally the first time I'd ever got the sails up, after the gu...

Re: Extreme preppary on the high seas

Nope. I probably wouldn't have ever got in to sailing if you did to be honest as spending a couple of grand to get paperwork would have put me right off. The Royal Yachting Association has a series of qualifications that most people in the industry will advise you to do, but they want your money for...

Re: Extreme preppary on the high seas

Thank you, It's not for everybody, I know. It'd probably be a living hell for a lot of people, but I love it. I know quite a few people that have sold their houses, bought or built boats of various sizes, and now live in places like the Caribbean, and the eastern Med. I'm in my thirties and single (...

Extreme preppary on the high seas

Hi all, I'm new here and thought I'd explain my setup a bit as it's fairly unique, and what I've learned over the years could easily be implemented in a house (room) or outbuilding so could perhaps be useful to some of you, though in my particular case this is boat based. Why a boat? Essentially bec...

Re: Is a bad winter on it's way ?

The best advice for weather predictions is to void anything said in the tabloids. I'm looking at the Express here as they LOVE a "worst winter" story. I think it probably stems from the demographic of their readership being somewhat more vulnerable to weather extremes. It's all nonsense cl...

Re: Hi from a newbie in Wales

Hi Wf, Thank you. I shall put a post together for those that are interested. I could easily sail to Europe as she is now, but for ocean crossings any more adventurous than crossing the Bay of Biscay to get to the med would require a bit of additional fit out work for safety, but it'd certainly be fe...

Re: Hello from Dorset

I'm also from Dorset, though didn't end up growing up there, annoyingly. :) I'm new here to. I posted a hello, but it seems I can only reply to posts and not make new ones at the moment so it isn't currently showing. I've lived afloat for some years now and being "off-grid" is actually rea...
