In the bad snows of 2010, I was working away and it was Her Maj that ended up getting holed up in Casa Deeps, I think she managed to get to and from work for half a day over 2 weeks. She's not got the same level of laziness as I do and it was doing her dinger in. Me, a couple of weeks on my own, my chi would have been in a very good place. :D

If we were snowed in with no mains, well life would go on, the dugs would get their walks (unless the snow was crazy high), I'd break out a couple of briefcase stoves for standard use (I've also got a lecky double ring if the gas if off for whatever reason, doesn't fit your scenario though), despite the guidelines I'm happy enough to use them indoors, they're only going to be on for a short time, boiling water or heating food, they are very efficient. During the day light wouldn't be an issue but like Brambles I'd be flashing up the solar panel (in an ideal world I'll be getting at least one other) to get as many wigglies as I can into my USB powered devices and power banks. I should be able to power tablets, kindles, phones and if it was going to be a long term thing, rechargeable batteries (AA/AAA/18650/14500). I've got both battery and gas powered lighting, although I wouldn't mind a bit more of both (natch). There would be a huge amount of smugness aimed squarely at Her Maj, a massive 'telt' would be getting dished out, probably at 'Cartman levels'.

I think I'm pretty much covered for most things up to medium term, there will always be gaps and I could probably up my medical stores but unless/until the peasants start to become revolting we should be good for food/fuel/lighting and we live in a new build which is pretty toasty, coupled with duvets/blankets etc we should be good. Bored without the TV and internet etc but I should be able to watch my large amount of TV series/films on my tablet, Her Maj has an Ipad so she'll just be annoying because of the lack of USB ports.

If things went on long enough, I've got a wood supply for the chiminea and I could get fresh supplies a minute or two from the house, that would help with cooking in the unlikely event that I ran out of gas/meths/coleman fuel/hexyamine etc for other cookers. Realistically if things went on this long then society would be pretty stretched and I wouldn't be leaving the house in case the looters were beating the door down. I think with the winter scenario, you know its going to be for a fairly finite period of time and its a case of waiting it out as comfortably as you can.

Wouldn't affect me in the slightest if it snowed. I don't have to get to work and I'm off-grid. I think a spell of heavy snow would have me leaving home with an ice axe and finding some gullies to climb up. :)

That said, 2010 winter was pretty grim. I was living in a shanty hut made out of timber, nails, and cheap blue tarp sheets. All through the night I had to keep waking up to check the snow on the shallow angled roof as snow is heavy and not going out for frequent clearings with a broom would have led to it collapsing on me.

Also, worth remember that any log burner you have warms you twice. Once chopping wood, and once burning it.

"Snowed in with no Gas Elec"

First i would check my elderly neighbours were ok.

Fire up the log burner and coal fire, get out the coleman gas burner out and stick the kettle on.

Longer term i would be getting the gennie ready to keep the freezer going.
