There is great information about this in the field of permaculture (pun intended :D ). A tree, with a ring of bushes, underplanted with lower plants, grapes growing through the tree (grapes produce much much more if allowed to grow in an apple tree rather than on a built structure.

We plant normal peas and beans, but very few people would see them. Next to the mulch pile, I dig a circle down about three inches on the rim going down to about 8 inches in the middle. I learned with a couple of apps. Now around 8-10 wpm. It's kind of fun to work with the apps, and nice to have this information. Who knows if it will ever come in handy.
