New here from Somerset and sometimes Transylvania

Post by Foxypreps »

Hello everyone! I'm from Somerset! Old lady at 67 years old. I retired from owning and managing a children's nursery, and now we own and manage a small, traditional, off-grid farm in Transylvania, north central Romania.

We also have a 'normal' home with a big beautiful garden and orchard in Somerset, and enough family in both places to 'cover' for us when we travel from one to the other. Life can be just a bit schizophrenic at times, such as when the cockerel wakes us up at 4:30 a.m. And we lie there for a few seconds trying to work out if we're in Romania or England.

In Romania, we raise/slaughter/grow/can/pressure can/salt down/put up/ dry/bake/bottle/ferment and distill at least 80% of what we eat and drink. In England, well maybe 20% - Tescos is far too convenient.

I've signed up here as Foxypreps, because Fox is my maiden name and the world and its cousins have been calling me Foxy pretty much all my life. I'm so pleased to enter a U.K. Forum.

Hi and welcome from an "old timer" (well, 68 year old!) in the depths of Norfolk.
There may be trouble ahead
But while there's moonlight and music
And love and romance
Let's face the music and dance

Hello from another West Country member ! Sounds like you have a variety of skills that are being lost in the UK. My mother went to Horticultural College in the 1950s and her main study was food preservation. I grew up on a smallholding, milking goats if I wanted milk for breakfast, likewise hunting for eggs. She gave up canning (17 and a half turns of the handle per can) when she got her first freezer in the early 70s. I have been trying to find the old canning machine but after the move to a farm 20 years back things still havnt been unpacked so its a uphill struggle.

Anyway, welcome to the forum...what part of somerset ? I lived in bristol for some years and knocked about with some lads from Radstock/Mid-Norton and have relatives in Frome. Its a part of the country I love.
