Nitrous oxide is often used as an adjunct to modern general anaesthetics - though not always, some doctors prefer medical air as a bulking agent/carrier gas (medical air 20.9% oxygen, nitrogen to balance, no trace gasses). Modern anaesthetic machines are built to deliver a minimum oxygen concentration of 25%. All anaesthetic machines must have a gas analyser for oxygen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and the anaesthetic agent in use.

Nitrous oxide is used as it as an analgesic effect which exacerbates the other components in the anaesthetic - although some people will tell you that nitrous oxide is an emetic with analgesic side effects rather than an analgesic with emetic side effects.

To induce anaesthesia with nitrous oxide alone requires high concentrations - its all about mean alveolar concentration - and that of Nitrous is dangerously high. That's why 'dental chair' anaesthetics were outlawed in the UK.

Leave it alone.

Life and death are both inevitable, medicine is just one of the things that get in the way.

The point I, and others, are trying to make. You should not need home made anaesthetics in a post SHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation. I think I mentioned it here or in another thread - what do you do for post-operative care? You can't, is the easy answer.

Science permits many options, but resources limit those available. Learn to deal with that.

The OP raised the question of home made anesthetics in a post SHTF situation for trauma etc.

I'm not sure that any of the solutions offered would do the job if a general anesthetic in a major situation. I'm not sure that I would want to operate without medical assistance.

However - assuming that help is NOT coming ...

Lidocaine IS available if you know where to look. It is available in the states online I think in either 1% or 2% strengths. Thats OK for a bit if stitching up? But big style general ????

I don;t think so ... The question is "do you want to cut off a leg or perform a c-section?'

If its either that or they die - you are going to do something/
If they are going to die anyway, but them out of misery please.

I'll keep researching

After reading what people have listed on this post, i still think i would opt for the Chloroform option.

Have a look at this stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diethyl_ether

Its not too difficult to make providing you have some intermediate chemistry skills and its considerably safer to use than chloroform. It actually took the place of chloroform as the general anesthetic of choice for the best part a century. It also smells pleasantly similar to pear drops

I do believe it may be illegal to manufacture though as apparantly its a key ingredient in certain drugs, but in a post SHTF scenario, who cares about that right?

Its also very, very flammable and requires the use of some nasty chemicals (concentrated sulphuric acid for a start  ) to produce. So dont try it unless you know what youre doing. But in a true life or death situation Id hazard a guess that this is one of the best you could make at home.

try smoking clove oil [google it] also try a sleeper hold to knock folk out you would have to bring them round after about 7/8 secs then put them out again.
do you know what coca plants look like , most dont they can grow in the uk then add a few things to the leaves and bingo diet coke.
