Meet Earl -- The god send gadget

Thought I'd share a gadget I found thats coming soon on Treehugger.com. Its a tough gadget to take with you into the back and beyond called Earl. Its an Android-powered, solar-charged, two-way radio enabled, waterproof tablet.

It has many many features such as: GPS, access to some 300,000 trail maps, thermometer, hygrometer, barometer and anemometer to name a few.

Interested to see what you guys think about it as I wouldn't mind one but I don't really need one either.

Does it make toast? and I wouldn't mind one too but I don't think I really need one either. :lol:
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

$299 at present, plus packing and import.

Wonder how hard it would be to make one with a RasPi?

I can't speak for you but if I tried to make this with RasPi, if I went on my time alone as if my wage to myself for making it was 25p a hour, it would still be cheaper to but and import one, than waste my time hahah

Handy, although I already have a rugged Garmin GPS, compass, thermo and a smartphone.

I'd be concerned with relying on one single gadget for all those jobs to be honest. Personally I'd buy individual specialised devices, as they'd probably be better, plus if that one gadget goes, you've lost eveything. ;)

Very cool bit of kit. Way out of my budget though.

Though I do have something similar for when Im offroading/greenlaning with my 4x4 club, I bought an old cheap laptop so I dont care if it gets nicked, broken or dropped in the mud, and in car charger for a few quid, filled the hard drive with OS maps of the UK and equivilant maps for any country Im visiting when I drive abroad, vehicle manuals, haynes repair manual, survival guides etc. which I keep hidden inside my landy. If I wanted to I could buy a plug in GPS dongle for it too, but with a map & compass and a vague idea of where I am I dont really need it.
