long life fuel

Post by poppypiesdad »

Hi all , happy new year and its been a while glad to be back

Was in my local chainsaw dealer getting new chain and bits for the chainsaw and saw that they had 5 litre drums of this on the shelves and wondered what it was all about

http://www.aspenfuel.co.uk/

Its an alkylate petrol and they do a straight , pre mixed 2 stroke and a diesel version as well , but the thing that really grabbed my attention was the shelf life 3-5 YEARS , astonishing I thought , they had a sample of the stuff and it actually smells more like heating fuel , its clear rather than yellow colour , and thought I'd share my find with you .

The only downer is the cost of it , for a 5 liter tub its £19 , but considering that you would have to constantly rotate your petrol stock as its only really got less than 6 month life span , it may be a consideration , especially the two stroke version , by the time you've added a tub of oil its not that more expensive ,anyway ,find ,enjoy ,digest .

I have petrol stored 4 years. Still good in the chainsaw. Don't get ripped off.

That would be before the started adding all that ethinol thatbevaporates gumming up everything and making petrol go off , have several layed up vehicles that now I make sure the tanks , filters , float chambers are empty after a run , easier than a Carb rebuild .

Bit negative on the don't get ripped off but did quote the price and might suit some people . Anyway for your info

Just out of interest does this class as the same as conventional petrol for storing? Max 20 L can be stored domestically , if I recall , which would rather negate storing it for up to five years unless ones consumption is only four litres per year.

Wow these guys work late

Hi James, yes although Aspen is not the same as normal petrol it does come under flammable liquid meaning that petrol storage regulations has to be adhered to.

So that would be
http://www.hse.gov.uk/fireandexplosion/ ... tm#storage

The limit is a maximum of two suitable metal containers each of a maximum capacity of ten litres and two plastic containers (which have to be of an approved design) each of a maximum capacity of five litres. These limits also apply to any containers kept in a vehicle parked in the garage or on the driveway (but not to the internal fuel tank of the vehicle). Under no circumstances should the petrol containers be stored in the home itself.

So its 2x 5 litre packs

Thanks for taking the time to find out.
It seems a bit of a shame really that to stay legal we can only stockpile a little under four gallons .

yeah but you have the tank in the vehicle itself, whats that 70-80 litres average?? top up and refresh as necessary + 20 litres in a can, that's 100 litres. of course you could always store as much as you like, its not like we've got "fuel" police is it??
