Re: long life fuel
5 months jebus, looking at it like that , just filled the van with 85 litres of diesel , that lasted me a week and got 600 miles out of it , but it is for work , that's what's scares me if there is a shortage , and the cost it was shy of £100 , that's what I've got to earn before making money , and paying tax , insurance, and then vat and tax .lonewolf wrote:if legality wasn't an issue( I'm only allowed 5 litres on my tenancy) I'd be looking at storing 100 litres in 20 litre containers, I reckon that will last me about 5 months or less post Collapse just for "scouting and scavenging" trips!!

I top up once a week when the fuel gauge gets down to half, that's usually about 35 litres or less. anyway my comment was based on post collapse living when nobody would be going to work but we would all be scavenging what we could find, I reckon 5 months tops in a SLOW collapse, if its a FAST collapse then I'm looking at WEEKS rather than months, after that there would be nothing left to scavenge its all been picked clean and i'll be staying close to home(or bug out whichever is the case) and probably wont be going any further than a mile or so-on foot off road as the roads will probably be too dangerous by then.
Adapt or Die, there is no middle ground.
Re: long life fuel
As Lonewolf says after a serious event supplies may last only weeks and regular commuting would be a thing of the past. Most would probably be used by people bugging out or evacuating and some would probably find its way into petrol bombs and more lost in accidents and burned out cars.
Looking at Poppypiesdad post makes me wonder about supplies to last for something smaller such as a tanker strike , refinery closedown or even bad weather. I've got about 20 litres of diesel stored and probably 250 miles worth in the tank so if there were no supplies I'd be ok for a fortnight or so but Poppy would need to store perhaps close to 200 litres.

Re: long life fuel
I always top up my tank when it gets down to half, never let it get empty or else your stirring up the crud in the bottom of the tank, I learnt this the hard way back in the late 70s-never did it again. in the fuel strike we had a full fuel tank and just limited driving to essential trips and nothing more, there were plenty of people panicking and using up their fuel trying to find petrol stations that still had fuel, and that was a relatively small strike, imagine if there was no fuel for months(or not at all).

Re: long life fuel
1000 liters of red for the tractor , which in emergencies would be used as road fuel , but the 4x4 is happy with svo in the summer and mix depending on the ambient temperature
But in this financial climate the tank has only about 300 litres left in the bottom which should see us to summer for a refill money permitting
