what is the chances of mains gas going down?

Propane should not be used INSIDE a dwelling........ unless its a fixed installation with they cylinder secured outside the property...

I have always wanted to ask a simple question.

If the gas does go down wether its because its pipes are damaged in a storm or accident or wether its a nationwide problem etc. Am i supposed to turn the big red handle thing off thats outside by gas meter or do i just leave it

Turn the gas off at the isolation valve usually right next to your gas meter and the individual appliences to off..

When the gas supply is about to be restored the gas board will go house to house to do this then when the gas is back on they will come and purge the supply and relight your boiler et all......

Thanks for that, never been to sure. My landlord sends someone every year to service my gas boiler and turns the boiler off at the wall and i always thought that was dangerous but apparently thats fine but i have never asked what to do if the gas goes out.

Ah no worries then one less thing to think about then already have a camping stove for cooking and plan to get the fire place opened up for heat so need to work a bit harder to change over thought this would keep the wife happy oh no gas has gone off ok pop out to the shed grab gas cylinder from bbq and conect up to house sit back and feel smug lol

A wood burner (or any other type of stove for that matter) is far better then any open fire in terms of fuel efficency....... And you can get some really nice looking designer ones if the Boss doesn't like Rustic or Period

yeah a stove would be better but it all comes down to pennies we are about to move in so hope an open fire is possible with only a little work while I do more overtime.

You'd still need a fireback, a surround, and someone who knows how to fit it all so it works

Unless you're lucky and someone just paneled over when they took the fireplace out.

Isn't Propane the same as LPG ? (just in smaller containers)

At the min there is the shape of a chimney in the living room plus a wooden fire place that looks like someone has just boarded up but can't take a propped look till we get the keys, unlike our current flat they bricked it then boarded and left the 70s tile fire surround always wanted to get rid but it's a rental and land lord said ok but had to carpet and plaster at my cost


I think the gas comes in propane and butane, orange and blue cylinders one has a lower freezing temp cant remember which at the mo. I think lpg is for cars liquid petroleum gas?

Lpg or Propane orange , bulk tanks painted a light green
Butane blue

Propane has lower boiling point / freezing point so works better than butane in colder weather

Cars use propane/lpg same thing but some of them use liquid take offs rather than vapour .

My boiler is bust. I am relying on my bioethanol fireplace and my electric radiator. Had a shower yesterday with the help of three electric kettles and a watering can. Gas can go off at any time in your house. There are multiple points of failure. the grid, the delivery, the boiler and more.
Its a question of whether it will be a long term thing or a short term thing really.

Also a point to think about from a cooking point is gas rings/oven. I have a gas hob and I made sure that it didn't have one of those safety switches on it that prevent you from turning the gas on in error - they are electric ignition only. The reason being if the leccy power is out, I still want to be able to light my hob with a match held to the burner, but if it has a safety thing, then I gather I wouldn't be able to do this.

Yes I has also heard that the gas would be the last thing to go as if they turned it off centrally, then the time and cost involved in going house to house to ensure each system was safe and didn't need purging from trapped air in the system would be huge.

My friend lives out in the sticks and has bottled gas but it is very costly and you need enough space to store 6 or so bottles, two that are used, 2 as back up and two spare in case of non delivery due to bad weather etc.
