Re: Dogs.
The logistics of keeping a dog are problematic. A 100lb GSD will require a tin of meat and one and a half tins of mixer a day. you had better have plenty of storage room for the dog and you own food.

It's true that they would be an extra mouth to feed but they are not obligate carnivores. They don't need to eat meat.Hamradioop wrote:The logistics of keeping a dog are problematic. My GSD is happy to eat almost any thing from rice and peas to pasta and sauce, it's not the best diet for them but they will survive for a long time on normal human food. For me the benefits of having him around would out way the extra mouth to feed.

Re: Dogs.
Well beagles are smalls dogs but ours is definitely the best burglar alarm , all though he will just lick you to death
Re: Dogs.
I have 3 stafs
and are duft as you can get BUT you walk in my door you dont want to go any further
due to the MAD noises coming from the dogs!
is good as people FREAK OUT!!
and soon as they are let out you are MAULED by tongues!!
unles you are being agressive then no not even god can save you!
i plan on taking my pack and in fact enlarging it
if you are living rough day to day
they provided great security for people approaching you/r camp
warmth on cold days/nights
hunt for food
protection in confrontation
if you have a family or maybe small settlement and for resource gathering you need to leave them protetion for them
although some extra work i think they will be a LARGE benefit to surviving

I have a Staff too and he's exactly the same! Soft as anything, but you wouldn't know it to look at him; looks like a right bruiser!
He's a bit of a scrapper when he wants to be (despite being a huge coward), but he's learning that it's unacceptable behaviour most of the time. He's a great burgular alarm and sounds off at the slightest provocation. But, he excels at being a hot water bottle. Took him camping and he insisted on sleeping at the bottom of my sleeping bag for the whole trip!
He comes with me to work, and most other places, so there's 2 days rations for him in my GHB. Plus, stockpiled dog food with the rest of my supplies.

I have to go with Hillybilly on this one. My research, including opinions from a number of vets, suggests that it's cooked bird bones that are the risk. The cooked bones are more brittle and tend to shatter when chewed, causing shards which a dog can choke on. The risk is significantly reduced in uncooked bones. That being said, my dog doesn't get bird bones at all.ForgeCorvus wrote:Hillybilly444 wrote:No, not boned. I too have a staff - big headed brute of a dog - he would kill any burglar that broke in - when he trips them and makes them fall down the stairs wanting his fuss! But looks the part and that should be enough.
Chicken wings raw are fine, give them to mine as a treat, crack crack and there gone.
As an aside mine had a fungal ear infection. six or more courses of drops from vet and would clear then return. If your dog has this try apple cider vinegar. Cleared my dogs up and do it once a week to maintain as has no effect on healthy tissue.
What ever the situation my boy is coming with me. Member of the family!

We have collie cross with we think alsatian looks like a small alsation from far doesn't like strangers will bark and growl at everyone but not kids. She is a rescue dog from an abusive home but is so loyal to the family scared of the neighbours wild party's and the washing machine but I know she would go for anyone who meant us harm but looks so cute. Part of the family and we normally have a months worth of food in for her plus she will eat anything we eat
Not planning for the end of the world just to survive till normality resumes, while sticking to the scout moto be prepared!
Still considering do I want to survive the end of the world or deck chair on the front lawn with a cold beer?

Re: Dogs.
Keeping food stored for a dog does not need to be a huge task, I feed my working cocker 260g of skinners feild & trial per day. A 15KG bag costs around £20 and lasts 2 months. 6 bags for a year does not take up to much space and he would help provide food for the table.
