asbestos roof
asbestos roof
The new shed (well to me a new shed) has an asbestos roof it looks to be in good condition and I wont be getting ride of it at this moment in time, this is the only roof with a plastic down pipe that I can use to collect the rain water if I treated it would it be safe to drink or should I just use it for washing and such. If at some point in the future I wished to cover it what would people suggest I cover it with.

Re: asbestos roof
In a word no. Do not use it for anything water related. Just to be safe.
When you get rid, you must ring the waste disposal service at your local council. It is a serious waste hazard I am afraid. When you replace it you could use 3" profile bitumen sheets, or uv treated plastic , which I have on my workshop. They are good.

Re: asbestos roof
Well actually, although I wouldn't recommend it, you can theoretically eat asbestos without it causing you any harm. It is only known to cause harm to the respiratory tract and therefore has to be breathed in to cause harm.
A lot of older houses have Asbestos Water Tanks in their lofts and a significant proportion of the UK water distribution network use's Asbestos Cement water pipes which were laid in the 1960's and 70's.
Even so, I wouldn't choose to collect any kind of drinking water from it.
With regards to covering it, probably easiest to remove and replace it, but alternatively there are proprietary paint type products that can be used to encapsulate corrugated asbestos cement sheets.

I had some sheets taken away by the Council. Not cheap!jansman wrote:When you get rid, you must ring the waste disposal service at your local council. ... you could use 3" profile bitumen sheets
Not sure I'd like to drink off a bitumen roof...

Re: asbestos roof
Our double garage, separate to house and built later, has a corrugated asbestos roof. We found a few square feet of the stuff in an old shed full of excess roof tiles, etc. Wouldn't have known what it was if we hadn't had a workman in who told us. I rang the Council to ask what to do and they told us, as there was no-one within a hundred miles who would take it (for a fee) and they didn't have a protocol for it, we were to carefully wrap it in several layers of polythene (bin bags, or whatever), secure it and take it to the main dump. I bought some professional quality face masks first and did as told. If we ever want to remove roof or re-build garage, it'll be expensive. I think someone has had a butt attached to the downpipe before, but I wouldn't even think of taking the water off that roof. Fortunately have enough to fill a swimming pool off the house roof. Could you ... rig up a water collector: child's paddling pool/sand pit up high enough to feed it into the water butt? In this country it would soon fill up.cpslashm wrote:I had some sheets taken away by the Council. Exactly, but isn't it outrageous that they keep telling you how dangerous this stuff is then then say they can't help you and sort it out yourself! They almost behave as if it's funny that you're a law-abiding, careful citizen trying to do the right thing. As long as you pay your council tax ...Yorkshire Andy wrote:Our local council tip takes it as long as its bagged

would have made a great health and safety training aid
then again some of these people who run the courses are totally clueless

for example.....
But back on the asbestos these should help
personally id clean the roof of moss and alge using scraping and bagging then pressure wash and if waterproof and sound apply several coats (one thinnned primer coat of thinned bitumen and thinners or other thinning agent as described by the instructions on the tin)
of this kind of product
