Free Food Grade Buckets (With Lids)

Post by FEISTY »

I can't find this anywhere else, but please feel free to move it if this has already been discussed.

I have looked online at food grade buckets, Mylar bags, etc for dried food stores. Just to get started, it's a lot of money and I'd rather spend that on food. So my question is: where can I get clean (as in, not battered about) food grade buckets with their lids for nothing? Has anyone done as the American guys suggest and asked in shops, restaurants, supermarkets, etc and what has been the response? Apparently these things are widely available. I just need to know if this is true before I approach my local Tesco or whatever. I would also need a cover story, eg I'd like them to grow veggies in :).

through a brewery friend of mine i can get these 25lt buckets with good sealing lids. they held food items used in brewing so are safe for food stuffs. If you are anywhere near norwich let me know as i can put you in touch with him as there are as many as you want for free. he also has many 25lt plastic water storage containers (jerry can type) also free.

Just a thought here: it may be cheaper for you to arrange a courier to collect a pallet load sorted from this end. Of course i cant devote many hours to this for every member on here but im willing to do a bit to help out.
Due to the arrangement of my fathers funeral tomorrow im likely to be away from the pc for a couple of days but i will try and help members getting this item sorted ;)
Please bare with me in my ramblings, I'm an ageing hippy struggling to control the voices in my head.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all that great info. It's given me two leads. One - I have a friend who works in a distillery (I know not the same, but they must bring in the grain somehow) and I know he would get some for me if they have them to give away. Two - one of my brothers works in a bakery ... I also know someone whose family owns a well-known in Scotland meat products company - if I bump into her ... Pity my husband's cousin and her husband, who are both brewers, moved to Australia ... :(. I also have a neighbour whose son went to school with my son, who own a restaurant (although in all honesty I think most of their food comes out of a can :(). Plenty to follow up on. Just not happy with spending several pounds on a plastic bucket, although I don't mind shelling out for the black boxes to hide my cans, etc. I may even ask at Morrisons and Tesco - I guess they can only say no.

Another source could be Freecycle, place a wanted add on it. http://uk.freecycle.org/

My local bakery sells their buckets for a whole quid each.
I really like the apple filling ones as they're rectangular and the Branston pickle ones (smaller but square....more sorta cubish really :) )

Prefer square/rectangular myself. Don't think we have a local bakery here anymore. I think the nearest to that is in the supermarkets where they "bake" in-store.

The distillery is "no go". Everything comes in in bulk by lorry :(.
