I'm going to try the 50p Tescos coffee next time we go, wont be for a couple of weeks, next week we're going to Morrisons, and the following its back to Lidl, we do a "big" shop in Tescos about once a month.

Something I've noticed over the last month or so is the lack of copper coinage in my shopping change. I normally just pop it into a jar until I have enough to cash in at the bank, but It's taking longer and longer to collect the same amounts I used to in the same time period... A link to rising food prices, maybe.

Our rule is if it's advertised on telly and doesn't have a yellow label or a really good special offer, we're just paying extra for the advertising.

We shop online which has reduced our spend in the supermarkets dramatically. It makes it easier to follow a list or meal plan and you don't fall for the impulse buys. Special offers are usually advertised, and of course if you are buying 12s of cans of tomatoes then they are delivered.

We also use the high street a lot more - greengrocer and butcher especially. We have an "ethnic" end of the high street with several cheap greengrocers, and we can discuss cheaper cuts of meat with the butcher.

Indian shops are great for rice, pulses, sauces and spices of various descriptions, and are very good value.

It does take more time though, a big chunk of the weekend, which I resent.

"brand wankers" - lol

I do taste tests...genuinely. less so these days, but i used to do them quite often, and I agree, brand isn't important.

A row of coffee's...also did decaffeinated...so I've tried the options. If the 50p coffee did it for me I'd be all over it. If the £6 coffee was always £6 I'd never buy it, but the £6 coffee at Sainbury's own brand prices? I don't mind if I do.

My most recent taste test was Gin and Tonic. We tried to judge the tonic and the gin. Clearly the accuracy of the test may have diminished through the evening, we were drinking 'large ones'!!

Anwyay, favourite tonic was Fever few...but that is stupidly priced...next favourite - Sainsbury's economy diet. Tick. Scheweppes and the stuff with a twist of lemon? Nope.

The non branded Gin was perfectly acceptable, until we moved onto shop bought. Shop bought made the other pretty undrinkable. Hendricks with anything is the best. We decided the non branded stuff was good as a 'weekday gin'...there were 4 of us that were happy drinking it until we knew better.

Ice Creams...rums...yoghurts...cheeses...colas...oven chips...baked beans...meusli...various biscuits...have all been the subject of taste tests.

And from there, you know the products by taste and you factor in price for your purchasing decisions. Most expensive isn't always best, branded isn't always best.

oh - Beef mince - never go for the cheapest. Fish - never buy from a supermarket...which in my case means never buy!
