Mouse, beware of negative people they will drag you down until you drown with them.

I looked into a council allotment, but the waiting lists are really long and I'm realistic enough to accept that I may not be able to maintain something of that size. The garden plots at work are smaller and of a size I could manage alone if the quality of the ground were a little better! There's a community garden nearby too, but they provide the seeds which I don't like. I'm going to further investigate vertical gardening :-)
I would be looking at container/vertical cropping too. Su's article was good on that subject. I used to be secretary of our allotment society, and I had one and a half plots. I gave them up as I was producing too much. Also it was VERY time consuming. More time than I could spare with a young family and demanding job. I was talking to one of the allotment holders today. He has been there 18 years and when I was there he had the same ground as me. He told me that now " The kids have gone" he no longer needs the produce. Now he has half a plot.
I have now given up my acre of ground, rented for the purpose of making money. It worked but was not meant to be. Sooo... I have gone back to the back garden. Now I do have a rather large garden, but I could never produce everything from it. Last year I experimented with containers in a little paved area. VERY productive! I grew runner beans in a 10'x 1' border,courgettes/narrows in dustbins, spuds in pots and sacks, salad in containers. A real success. It really is amazing what can come from a small area.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

This is the sort of positive post that inspires me to be more productive with home grown veg. Cheers!
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

An interesting-looking course on growing container veg in small spaces. I have no connection to the supplier etc. but it looks very good.

I think I will say yes to the plot on Monday :) Some back story to my final decision: yesterday my boss (the one who was quite negative about the new location of the garden plots) said 'well if you take it, you'll have to find something you can grow in a really short space of time', which was a massive reminder that strictly speaking I could be let go after late May (I'm sort of maternity / sickness cover), despite being included in office workload plans until much later in the year, reassured by other superiors that I'll be needed and not having a fixed end date to my employment yet. It was a bit of a kick in the teeth and I went home really unhappy and quite worried. Then I spoke to a friend at work who was quite shocked that our boss lady would say that and reassured me that I can always go on the company temp register - not brilliant pay, but there's always work. So when I met the garden plot lady I asked if I'd still be eligible if I was temping and she said yes! She also reassured me that the ground is actually quite good (if a little stony - I can deal with that) and security isn't as much of a problem as I'd been led to believe (apart from the rabbits... ). At this rate, I could be digging the plot over Easter! Woohoo!

This is very good advice and very true. I must learn to turn the volume down on certain people's influence on me, even when the buggers are employing me!

Thats great news, Mouse. Your current immediate boss sounds like the one you need to beware of in relation to negativity.

Su - enjoy!

As for me, I'm glued to the laptop for an online conference, but my connection's rubbish, it keeps pausing the conversation, very distracting. Once it gets going, I'm going to be darning socks!

You know, that sounds abusive to me. Sounds like your negative boss gets a kick out of beating the crap out of you emotionally. The last time I came across a situation like that in work (a long time ago), the girl in question was having marital problems at home and eventually had a nervous breakdown and left her job for good - she was just following typical bullying behaviour trying to make herself feel better by making other people miserable. She was not anyone's boss, but behaved as if she was and had everyone on edge - totally unpredictable and would make up new "rules". The partners did nothing about it (they were either scared of her or got a bit of a kick out of seeing the office shenanigans in progress). She tried it with me - big mistake. I told her straight out to stop ordering everyone around, as, last time I looked, she wasn't actually in charge. I could hear the other staff quietly cheer and, in fact, they (and one of the partners) afterwards thanked me for clearing the air. The Partner promised to sort things out before it got any worse. 'bout time! The point is: learn to recognise the people that are negatively affecting you. Ignore your snidey boss until you've been there long enough to report her and if there's anyone else out there, you have two tactics. If you want them in your life, state your terms. If you don't, shut them out. I hate bullies more than anything else. I've seen the damage they can do and it's one of my missions in life never to let anyone in my family or in my circle of friends be harmed. Sometimes people don't realise what they're saying and, in those situations, I would say, "Why do you think it's OK to say that to me?" Walk away. You're not looking for an answer, but it makes them look at themselves a bit more closely and what they see might not be so great. Be confident and expect respect. Good luck with your plot. I'm sure it'll be a great success.

Mouse who do you work for?

You work for yourself, your needs, wants and dreams are what you work for.

At the end of the day you are an independant contractor who has agreed to contract with a company for your time and skills and have given the a certain amount of control over you.

Evening Guys and Girls.....

Been a good week all in all...
Wrote a fresh list this week of items I would still like to get and need, No matter how much I buy I always seem to think of new projects or new items I need within my preps.

With the recent news coming out about the weather and how things are only going to get warmer in the coming years I was wondering what opinions would be on stocking up on sunblock cream or would that be a bit of an over reaction.... I know a prepper using the words over reaction I am sure their is some irony in their somewhere :D The reason behind this thought process was purely down to last years summer and I remember people complaining within the local town that they couldn't buy electric fans for love nor money even in the larger retail branded shops...

Not much going on this week boot fair tomorrow so who knows what nic nacs I will find.

Have a good week people be safe be lucky and be excellent to each other

Having food, water and shelter are not a right.
They are a responsibility.

So make it your priority.
