New house = New preps.

Post by bettersafethansorry »

Move in to my new place 1st may... although wasn't my first choice as its a (new build) I have noticed on our viewing much potential.

Job List:

1. Under stair storage from kitchen is large and long, this will be shelved with a "secret" boxed off section at the end. this small area will be for security preps that will never see the light of day unless we have complete social meltdown.
the res of the area will be set up as a floor to ceiling pantry/dry foods store.

2. with our new fairly secure back yard i will be putting an alarmed shed. no my idea for this is as any shed would be with one exception... this is my window timber. i will measure each window in the house and mark this on the interior of the shed as a plan with cut lined and labels, in Major TSHTF scenario this can be collapsed and cut up to board the windows...

3. The house already benefits from a security system (bonus) added to this will be 360 cameras on each wall (detached house) and in-case of power outage front and back doors will be fitted with battery powered door alarms.

4. Attic, The attic space is quite useable and has pull down stairs/ladder this will be used for long term non perishable and community preps, Blankets, Clothing, Military hardware, lanterns, etc. This space will have battery operated short term use lighting for one time unload if needed.

5. Sons army room. some of you may have seen my plan for my sons room this has chnaged dramatically as it is a much smaller room. It will still be done just on a smaller scale... the key factor with this room is "hiding in plain site" the camo nets, ammo cases, gas masks, etc etc will all seem to my son and his friends and anyone viewing the house as a cool childs army/call of duty theme room. to my is more storage for things we can and will use if TSHTF .

That's so far what im thinking and starting to design... (leave the mrs to pick wall colors etc)

any further thoughts, questions or ideas for me please let me know

I rather like number two ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I confess, I like No 1 - my previous house had a sort of dead space, that ran the entire length of the house, but was only the width of a corridor, and about four feet high - ideal for secure stuff, box of four feet at the end, and its there, safe, great peace of mind.

At the moment, I'm moving about landscaping materials - any ideas for shtf uses for pebbles, stones, small boulders, pieces of slate, that sort of thing?

The other thing I'm doing is throwing organic everything I can at the soil, to improve plant nutrition - as a new build, you may find yours is really needing that. What have you seen so far?

And finally - I'm getting "detached" house envy    thats great!

well you could use them to fill planters and provide ballistic protection.

This is really interesting. I have a fascination for hidden spaces (in the walls, in furniture), hiding in plain sight, etc and have been looking into this for a while. My efforts so far are small and I won't say what they are, but I have my eye on two large wasted areas walled off in our bedroom and when I move a couple of interior walls, I'll be doing something interesting with that too. I think it started when I was quite young and my Mum inherited some gorgeous old furniture from her Mum which had hidden drawers. My younger Bro and I are devastated to this day that she sold it for next to nothing because it didn't fit our modern house :(. I have also been thinking about our windows in the event of societal break-down, but worried that we have some very large ones - how on earth to deal with that? I think your idea of preparing ready to cut panels is genius. I've started to collect marbles. Why? Various reasons. I thought they would make a pretty mulch in planters and, instead of them disappearing into the soil, they could be washed and re-used over and over again, as well as adding a bit of interest in the dullness of winter. They're heavy and would stop light plants being blown over too easily (if they are blown over, I'll be picking up marbles for a week though) and I also thought they could be used if necessary in a defence situation - on their own or with a catapult ... if the SHTF, I plan on collecting them into containers and bringing them indoors, so until/if that day dawns, they won't be taking up space inside. This post is getting too long, but I thought all if the ideas were great.

I'm in a similar situation house move soon so looking at extra storage ideas. One we or should that be I am going to be doing some work to kitchen cabinets and plan add drawers under the cupboards where the kick pannel is. I know people suggest removing and storing stuff there but how to get it out so drawers as it's more for mid term storage.

Long term storage I have thought about burying an old fridge and then putting a shed on top with a trap door in the floor thinking this should be secure and reasonably dry and totally unknown but not thought much more about this though

interesting fridge idea i would be curious to see how well the rubber seal holds up...

with regards to the kick boards in the kitchen be aware potential damp on floors especial near appliances and back door. Personally i would store on SHTF stuff here and not put ease of access like draws in. in SHTF scenario your not gonna be bothered about ripping them off and also nice bit of fire wood.

Not sure how much you've looked into the fridge idea.. I reckon it's going to be more hassle than good.
If its not got power and in a working state it becomes a hot box - any moisture inside turns to mould in days, the internal coolant gasses I imagine will become unstable with the extremes of temperature and I doubt the seal will do any good.
You maybe better burying something like one of those plastic waterproof garden storage chests as I think they already have decent seals etc... and the won't rust or rot.

I wouldn't bother cuttting up a shed for boarding windows but if you want to do something similar I'd use marine ply, pre cut the right sizes for your windows and store them in the shed. Marine ply is much much tougher than the timber the shed will be made from, they would even stand up to someone trying to cut through with an axe.
