Just got my OH on board with getting hand tools BUT I don't know where to start and what to look for. I thought about replacing DIY tools, garden tools and woodworking tools. Hopefully the car boot sales will produce some good finds.clearthedecks wrote:pre-motorised hand tools - get'um while you can.pol76 wrote:Clearthedecks
What a great find I have never thought of needing that type of item I have a small axe thats all and my mate have chainsaws but they will need fuel which could be a problem long term
max
Short list - please feel free to add -
Two Man Saws - still cheap on e-bay £5 to £50n used, £100 up new (army surplus £50 new)
critical piece of kit - 1/2 the effort, sharpen with a file, cuts from 2' to 3' diameter
quiet as well, barter value - hard to measure - if its real bad, life and death - if its
economic,then its the cheapest fuel!
scythe - There is only one supplier with the whole kit in the country (to my knowledge) Do you need
one? well I decided that I'd rather have than not - used £10 upwards, new - £45 up but
there are different blades and they need peening, so to be prepped you need more - all up
£100 - need to practice peening though so a few £5+ blades would help.
Bill Hooks/.Slashers - a very usefulcutting tool with more weight than a machete, combined with a
the a long handle gives greater reach than a knife or machete, surprisingly
expensive for high brand (elwell) used items but plenty of them from £5
grinding stone - I went for a treadle operated with a 12" stone came in at £45 and a long trip, but
these can be upto £100ish - not many of these left and I do not think they are
made new now.

Having felled your 3' diameter tree how are you going to move it?
If we fall back to pastoralism so fast that the local blacksmiths don't remember how to knock up a new scythe blade then we're stuffed anyway as there'll be nothing in the field to harvest.

MrsCC still had £300 worth of Sports Direct Vouchers that she had won to get rid of so sent me up there with the instructions of "buy what you want, I dont care what it is...we need to spend the vouchers"
.
Sports Direct isn't the first place I would go to for prepping gear but they do sell a fair bit of Karrimor stuff cheap and a few other Hiking and Camping bits so managed to pick up;
A fairly decent 10x25 Monocular
Karrimor Fold up Poncho (very good)
Karrimor X-Lite 100 Sleeping Bag
Karrimor Gaiters
Karrimor Sleeping Bag Liner
Karrimor Hydration Bladder
Hand Sanitising Gel
Campri Camp Lantern
16 x "D" type Batteries
4 x 9v Batteries
Spork
2 x Karrimor Lightweight Towels
Karrimor Thermal Gloves (will fit inside my Motorbike Gloves)
Inflatable Pillow (i was running out of things to buy
)
I know that Karrimor hasn't got the reputaion it used to have but apart from me looking like a walking advertisement for them it's been a good day.....especially as it all came to £0's
Hopefully they will get some new stock in for the Spring.....still got some vouchers left to spend

Thats an excellent bit of kit Lisa. I nearly got that package but settled on just the Berkey SS2 in the end from the same place. Best prices around as well.lisaloolibell wrote:and my most exciting buy

Have you had butter buds before? If so, are they any good? I will get some if they are.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
theyre ok itsy, nothing replaces proper butter. Ive tried getting butter powder from the U.S. but the shippings really expensive via ebay and most of the companies that do freeze dried food dont ship over here because of import restrictions. Ive got tinned clarified butter (ghee) which is ok but tastes a bit weird on bread and crackers. Ive had butter buds sprinkled on toast and baked potatoes and you get a buttery taste but its still not butter. You can get sachets of it from lakeland.co.uk and on ebay if you want to give it a try.
