Ham Radio

Post by oshb5 »

Hi All

I am a Ham Radio operator and I obviously do not condone any unlicensed use of any ham radio equipment. That said In any situation that causes the grid be it power or comms to go down for any length of time. It will fall back on Radio hams to keep the comms up n going. Now with the introduction of some small hand held hand units that are available. But are available for around just over £30 and come with two bands of Freqs. It only take a short time of learning the main frequencies used for announcements and so on and you can once again be listening to anything that is going on or places to meet or such things as this, I apologise if this has already been posted or discussed.

Hello Os,
Would you be so kind as to give an example of one of those sets you mention.
It's been a long while since my CB days (AM) but I have thought about getting a HAM base station and 3 sets of hand held transceivers for both of my daughters that live local and one for myself for when I am up the pub, oops, out scouting bug-out routes :D
For our two local daughters I'd need a TX/RX range of circa 4 miles but for my son and his family I'd need to get the base station to receive/transmit from and to his house 15 miles away (I live on one of the highest points in Essex).
Any tips would be great as I am so out of the loop RE CB or HAM.
Do you need a license to buy HAM transceivers ?, it's a topic my group has toyed with on numerous occasions and I think it is a thing that is worth the investment.
My pain killers mean I can't drive any more so the wife is about to do the week course and test so we can be mobile again.
I have been looking at Land Rover station wagons which come with either 12V or 24V. Ideally the base station would need to be removable from the house and fitted into our bug-out motor when the smelly stuff hits, I guess a 12V Land Rover would be best ?
BTW, The bug-out motor would only be run out for a yearly MOT but otherwise stored in a lock-up ready to go.

Thanks,
Wulfshead.

Thanks for the info, I think I now have what I need for my comms needs and that of my family as a SHTF comms system.
I'm gonna go with CB and boots plus a pre-amp so to cover the distance to my son and his family.
I got a rather large compensation payment coming in the not to distant future so I will be aiding my family's prepping budget. Without a doubt a good reliable comms system is right up there at the top of the list as a first instance group coordination device.

Thanks again,
