Food Insurance

Post by itsybitsy »

I know you can get specific food insurance in the US - I watched a video recently about a US couple had taken out over $60000 worth of insurance on their stockpile of food and household items - but what about in the UK?

It certainly wouldn't be worth it for me right now - but for some of you seasoned preppers out there who have already got a years worth (or perhaps even more) of food and other items stockpiled then you must have invested a fair amount of dosh.

Has anyone got/considered this?

I would have thought you could claim your household insurance for this as long as the total amount you're insured for is in excess of the value of your total contents and no one item is above the threshold for individual items. Another reason to keep an inventory of stock and take photos (keep in a separate location as well) as proof. A quick 'phone call to the insurance company to check would be a good idea. If you keep stuff in your garage, you'd need to check that garage contents are covered. Insurance companies will insure anything - just need to check if you're already covered and, if not, add it on. I'm sure they've had stranger enquiries :).

I seem to recall my mother claiming on the household insurance when her freezer failed some years ago. She received a payout for the lost food , although to be honest we ate as much as we could . Wether it would be worthwhile taking out specific freezer insurance is a different matter as I feel that the incidents of freezer failure don't warrant paying out for years.

You cn definafely claim after a powercut for freezer contents and we had a roof leak while the roofs were being redone and people in or street claimed for whole larders full of food!

The way I help people understand why I prep is using the term "food insurence" they seem to get it when you put it in that light.

I saw a US based ad once for "prepper insurance". I laughed and thought anyone signing up will be straight on the FEMA supply network, or worse, the watchlist.
