Bought 4kgs of white rice today (has to be able to fit in freezer initially - the freezer is usually full to bursting with ice-cream and other rubbish ;)). More to come. There is really cheap white rice at 40p a bag (kg?) in Morrisons - is it any good? I paid £2.99/2kg bag. Bought 5kgs of Brown Basmati Rice (the long grain was the part cooked stuff). No need to Mylar bag it as it won't last past 6 months anyway. The plan is to build up 6 months worth of Brown rice to be used in rotation, with a much larger quantity of white rice stored in Mylar bags inside plastic buckets as this can last for decades if necessary. Bought double quantities of things like Ketchup - not absolutely essential, but can make a very boring diet a lot more palatable and a bit more normal for the kids. The lady on the check-out said nothing as my DD and I packed 9kgs of rice and several packs of wholemeal pittas (to be frozen at home and used as needed - always do this anyway). She must have thought I was feeding an army. I bought several limes and I'm going to cut two slices from each and freeze them. Each half of the lime will be squeezed into an ice-cube tray (I may top it up with Tonic ;)). When frozen the small lime cubes can join the lime slices in the freezer. Ready sliced lime and ready squeezed lime juice - just add gin and tonic. Quite often I end up throwing limes away - beer with lime just isn't the same ;) - not any more. Hope it tastes the same! Yes, I've been watching penny pinching programmes, but I'm doing this because I just hate wasting food.

the ultra cheap rice is edible and frugal, but I personally dont feel that it lasts as well as better quality rice. The flavour and texture seems to start off bad and then degrade somewhat, and a good quality organic brown rice or a good white basmati is a far superior product. However, if you are hungry and all you got is old cheap rice, cook the hell out of it and be grateful you have it.

It is probably older stuff they want shot of, although I have to say paying more doesn't always get you a better product. There's a lot of crap in M&S :). Sticking with my wholegrain for as long as possible - tastes so much better then the white, stodgy stuff and actually gives you some nutrition as well - win, win. The organic stuff is much more expensive and I'm not sure exactly how organic rice differs from non-organic rice. I like to know the details before I invest my cash. I do buy organic, to keep the level of pesticides and meds (antibiotics, etc) down, but it's actually quite difficult to get a wide range of organic products in this neck of the woods. I paid £5.98 for 4kg of white Basmati rice (£2.99/2kg), whereas I could have bought packs of white rice at 40p!!!! I think each of these packs was 1kg, so I could have gotten away with paying £1.60. Maybe we are being completely conned and it's just exactly the same thing. Anyone ever done a cooking/taste/quality comparison. We don't eat the white stuff unless it comes with takeaway, so I don't really want to break open a pack right now. I have to admit I was a bit gutted when I read that brown rice doesn't keep long term. If I had to choose between potatoes, pasta, brown rice, etc, I would definitely choose brown rice. Not mad keen on potatoes and really can't understand why people eat so much pasta. I guess when we are hungry post SHTF we'll eat our shoe leather if there's nothing else :).

Today I am repairing some loose slates on my main storage building. Last thing I need in there is rainwater.

I'm waiting to receive a couple of lantern torches from Amazon. Forgot to order oil for my lamp though

Where did you get the wick from? Are you running yours on paraffin or kerosene? I'm just about to try mine on kerosene because we have a ready supply of this at home.

There are loads of sellers on e-bay, i just chose the cheapest it was about £2.70 per meter, but it all depends on what size you want, seemed ok to me, i use parrafin, to be honest they are a total back up, i have 2x storm lantern both bootsale finds, a glass (smallish) table lamp and a brass flat bottom one that has a hadle so you can carry it like wee willy winky (needs a glass), i also found one of those 'weeble' bottom nursery lamps, but ive not got round to sorting that one out yet.

To be honest i wouldnt know the difference between the two fuels? :?

I'm a novice too. We have four lanterns which rarely get used and just sit there on the dresser looking pretty. I should give them an overhaul with new wicks and then try different fuel types.

I got my round chord style lamp wick from my local hardware store. Just asked the man, he rummaged around in the back with a few bumps and knocking sounds as are only at home in an old hardware store and then came out with both flat and chord. i needed chord for my home made olive oil lamps and my israeli terracotta ones.
