Inspired by Film and TV

Post by damaralenoire »

I know that films like Book Of Eli, and Day after tomorrow and Armageddon are all hollywood etc, but does anyone ever take any inspiration from these films.

I have mentioned it on other posts that my favourite film is THE BOOK OF ELI, cos there are parts in that film that could easily be real in the future, but there is a line in the film that Eli says to Salara after she asks him do you remember what life was like in the world before, he responds ""People had more than they needed, people didn't know what was precious and what wasn't, people threw away things they kill each other for now"

I think that those words are so powerful that i try and find use in everything, and my other bit of inspiration from that film was that he have wet wipes in foil packets from KFC and used them for bartering. Since that day, at every opportunity i have, i make sure that i take what ever freebies i can wether it be wipes, salt satchets, jam portions or like what i do when most of us stay in hotels, take the shampoos and shower caps when possible.

This is my collection since february where i been staying in hotels.

I always do this too! I have bags of hotel smellies and lots of sugar, salt & pepper packets, tea bags and packs of coffee, sewing kits, shower caps and shoe polishes. :P

My OH thinks I'm doo-lally

Most cafés have the sugar, salt and pepper in the little packets, always grab a few extra. Never eat KFC myself :| but son does. :?

Yes I do that sort of thing too. One other thing I do some might find to be really miserly or just embarrassing . My work takes me to many other peoples houses and I often look in the bins. Initially it started because I was dropping weeds and stuff I'd removed from the gardens ( a lot of grass cuttings I took to compost ) but then I started having a quick peek in the other bins. In the recycling bins it's common to find things like bleach bottles that still have a couple of spoonfuls left inside. These I pick out and drain. Similarly , years ago I worked at a hotel (building work not as a hotel employee) and one day watched a lad tip loads of little bottles into a bin. It was all shampoo and shower gel so I retrieved it and admittedly laboriously emptied all the little bottles into a few larger bottles.

I work at a primary school and the gov gives freefruit to the yrs R,1, & 2. By the end of the week we often have left over. I brought home 3 packet of tomatoes this friday, (the children really aren't keen on them,) so they will be turned into relish or chutney today. Waste not want not. I was hoping they'd leave the bananas as I wanted to try out my dehydrator on bananas but I will just be patient!

I go around a couple of streets regularly on bin day and pick up all the empty storage tins with lids, I clean these out then use them to store other stuff in, mainly in the garage-nails, screws, wallplugs that's sort of thing, I've been doing this ever since we moved here.

Hardly ever stay in hotels or eat out, so can't say I get such freebies, but to the other point, the tv programme that got me dreaming of a different life was the Good Life. A bit cheesy I know, but as a small kid it made me realise that the way everyone I knew lived, wasn't the only way. Still dreaming as I seem to be the only one who fancies the self-sufficiency life style, other half just doesn't get it. :?

My DH travels regularly for work (his next jolly is to Japan, but, as usual I won't get to accompany him :(). He brings back the hotel stuff. I've left it in the past, feeling that I should only use what I need (which is usually nothing). However, I've had a change of heart, especially when I hear that the stuff you don't use is thrown away for hygiene reasons. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but I take it now as we're paying a fortune for the hotel anyway (not the towels or anything like that, of course :)) and not only use the shampoo, etc, but rinse out the little containers and use them as travel bottles, as the ones you buy from Boots, etc, are usually quite brittle, difficult to get the lids off of to fill them and have cracked and spilled in our luggage. A small funnel really helps with the really small bottles. You could do all sorts with them, eg use them to store seeds, etc. I also add a little water to the shampoo bottles, etc, shake it up and get a few more shampoos out of it. I take great delight in telling my daughter how many more days I've made the bottle she would have thrown out last. I would have just used the stuff straight from the wee bottles and added water until there was literally nothing left.
