I really wasn't sure what to call this thread or which section I should put it in but I guess it's preparing.
Just out of curiosity, for the people who have children, are you going to continue educating your children if something goes wrong so you don't impede your children's growth? I.e. are you going to get any resources or learning material, for subjects which may not even seem relevant at the time, to help educate your children for both short-term and long-term situations or set aside time to develop your children's mind. This is just an idea I thought of, although it might be planning too in-advance if considered.
It would also be an advantage when they enter society if the supposed problem was solved. If it was a severe long term situation, it wouldn't be good for things to degress. This could range from interpretations of events in history to the understanding of different religions as well. People could have, even if they don't plan to use it, information just readily available about this stuff.

Great topic,
Please take a moment to make an introductory post in the New Members area. Many thanks.

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: future education
in a short term event you can probably home educate, in a long term or permanent state of affairs forget "reading, writing and arithmetic", they would need to know how to grow food, look after animals and build things.

Re: future education
Reminds me of a film I once watched, a guy decides to take his family to 'safety' away from Big City life.
One of the locals is a classic Nut-job Survivalist who's son forms an attachment with the city guy's daughter (they seem to be the only older teens in the area).
She offers to lend him a book and he asks if there are any pictures, turns out he can't read at all........ But, in the words of his father "He can field strip an M16 and reassemble it blindfold, you could hang him upside-down over a stream and beat him with sticks and he wouldn't tell you a thing" ...... Like I said total
Reading and writing are important, even more so in the PAW because finding someone to teach you stuff is a lot harder then finding a library.
Ditto for basic maths and practical geometry......... I think we won't be needing anyone to understand particle physics for a while though
Teaching would have to be confined to times when you can't get on with other work, such as early evening or during foul weather.
The only other option would be to support specialists, a 'Scribe' class if you like..... But we're unlikely to have monasteries being supported by the wider community to produce them, like we did before Henry VIII.
Why do you think that the Traveller community get so deeply in the gak with the authorities? Its partly because they have such a low level of Literacy

Re: future education
the reason TPTB don't like travellers is nothing to do with their level of literacy and everything to do with the fact they want everybody in a house where they can number and tax them.ForgeCorvus wrote:

Yes true, but they get themselves even deeper in the hole because they either don't read or don't understand the letters and documents that get sent to them.lonewolf wrote:the reason TPTB don't like travellers is nothing to do with their level of literacy and everything to do with the fact they want everybody in a house where they can number and tax them.ForgeCorvus wrote:

Because the system is setup on the assumption of universal literacy, its also cheaper to print stuff in fifteen different languages then to send someone to speak to you.

Re: future education
I knew a lot of "travellers" in Glastonbury(not Gypsies which is what I think you are referring to), most of them could read and write but weren't much good at filling in huge forms due to health complications.

Married a librarian. Had a couple of kids.
We now have around a thousand books ranging from children's flash cards, fiction, encyclopaedias, classics, science, engineering, cooking, gardening .......
They run on light - not necessarily electric.

I have paper books for reference and stuff I want to keep (Most of the Diskworld for example), I use my kindle for the other stuff.
I've got out of the habit of doing 'sums' without a calculator
