In reality, I'm probably more like Anne  . I asked my parents if I could go to boarding school and they said, "Yes". When I look back there was no chance we could have afforded it, but fortunately for them I soon forgot all about it. The stuff in books was, sadly, always much more exciting than in real life. We were allowed to wander for miles around the countryside without anyone knowing where we were and had cows popping their heads into our garden over the hedge. We did stuff like make swings out of tyres and old rope, tied to a tree and we'd swing out over the burn (stream/small river), we made go-karts out of bits of wood off-cuts and old pram wheels and a bit of rope to steer, but most of our games required nothing at all except our imagination. I think we are probably the last generation to be that fit without paying a fortune for a gym membership :). I think we are less creative and resourceful than preceding generations, who seemed to be able to make do with remarkably little. Lashings of ginger beer anyone ;)?

I did the den bit too, with my boyfriend, aged 5, same as me :D erm, that means we crawled under a tree and moved mud and leaves around :D

We moved house after that, and I got a bike for my 7th birthday - there was no riding on the pavement in those days, I was on the roads - I particularly remember cycling through Birkenhead Docks one weekend, aged about 8 - that was a bit scary  but there was quite a bit of ordinary wasteland where kids would race their bikes and build dens and climb trees, and I did that too :)

Its a shame that kids are not allowed to build dens now days there was a lovely one where I use to live which the council dismantled and then I read about some people complaining about a den built by kids in some woods and made the council take it down. It really made me feel sad people complain about the kids not getting out but when they do they complain about what they get up too.

'Boys, go outside and play'

ohhh daaad

'Boys, you can go outside and play, or you can stay indoors and I'll give you chores to do'

mmmmm......what chores?

I just want them to go build a dam, or fall out of a tree, or build a den, or explore...any of the stuff that was normal in the 70's and 80's. Ho hum.

Needless to say, I'm a bad father for that...

My brother and I used to go to some woods near a local golf course. We would spend hours every day in school holidays climbing trees, chasing butterflies, building dens and lighting bonfires over which we toasted bread on sticks. I am making sure that my daughter has a similar experience.
