butane gas cartridge

Post by mikefranks »

Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well.

I have purchased a camping gas stove, and along with it some disposable butane gas cartridges. Now, i wanted to know the shelf life for the disposable butane gas cartridge? Does anyone know? I have checked online and on the cans themselves but cant seem to find out. Hope someone will know on here.

Many Thanks

This is information from COSHH,I have no link as it is from a risk assessment file that I keep at work for adventure and outdoors equipment.
Quote from manual;

Butane Fuel Canisters

There are several different brands of butane fuel canisters. They are available in camping sections and sporting goods stores.

One 8 oz butane canister will provide 1-2 hours of burn time at maximum output. The recommended shelf life for a butane canister is 8 years.

what cartridge type is it?

self piercing ones are probably longer lasting than valved ones (rubber seals in the valves can perish with age)

keep them stored covered in light machine oil to protect the cylinders from external rusting...

I have the self piercing ones that are 15 years old. Used one the other day as our cooker was being fixed. They are kept in a cool dark outbuilding. No problems.
