[quote="FEISTY"]Anyone any idea how many kgs of rice fit comfortably in a one gallon Mylar bag?

I can answer that now :). About 5lbs (used one 2kg and about a quarter of another bag). Made me realise that a one portion scoop (75g recommended) would be a good thing to add to the bucket when it's full). That left a good two inches at the top - I've ironed one inch and the other inch will cave in over the top of the rice when the oxygen absorber gets to work. So, wondering long the OAs take to work? I won't know the seal on the bag has worked until then. I'll be putting a clean, empty rice bag in the bucket and a label on the outside (these may take the form of letter stickers, eg R for rice, L for lentils and F for flour - don't want people knowing what's inside the buckets if they see them). Does anyone else have a better system. Also, what do you call those plastic gadgets for removing the lids without ruining them. I'm breaking nails here :).

Practiced my tofu making and tried to cut some corners. What do you know? If you cut corners things go pear shaped! So I ended up eating some tofu that was rather substandard and undercooked and have digestion issues.

What i have learned is

1) always make sure the soy beans are thoroughly blended into a pulp

2) make sure you use a nut milk making bag not a regular sieve

3) make sure you cook the cr@p out of the milk prior to making it into tofu.

Ah, well, we live and learn.

Next batch will be better and I will be well on my way to saving money on meat.

Ordered two portable gas heaters (the green ones by ISSS). They seem to be very, very good for the price. Will probably come without gas, so that's next on the list. While I'm here, why does the petrol station have a cage of what look like large gas canisters in the forecourt? Are they for caravans? Do you just drive in, buy one and load it in your car/trailer/caravan, or do they deliver? I had never noticed them before I started prepping and this malarkey has opened my eyes to a whole other world :). Are there people/companies out there who deliver this stuff to you? Like I said, a whole other world.

Yes. Look up Calor Gas as an example. You need to buy the bottle(s) first, then the gas, then you just exchange for gas filled bottles. The bottles always remain property of the company. Hope that helps

having been camping, caravanning, BBQ'ing and been in industry for a fair few years may i enlighten you :D

Starting with the absolute basics......

Butane / Propane ... Butane is marginally cheaper and legal to use INSIDE domestic dwellings however it will freeze at about 0^C Propane is Illegal to store or use inside a domestic dwelling (ok in say a detached garage or shed) but will not freeze till immsmc about -15^C
(i use it in the workshop heater legally on propane but if i put it in the house it would be illegal ((its more explosive than butane)

Butane is normally a BLUE bottle

Propane is normally a RED bottle

(although with the advent of fancy decorative and hidiously over priced patio gas some colours may vary  )

Image

so thats the 2 gasses in a nut shell in some camping gaz cartridges (the small ones you see in most camping shops they are often a blend of the 2 gasses)

Regulators.....

there are 3 basic types

threaded butane 28mbar (for the small calor 4kg bottle iirc)

Image

clip on butane 28mbar

Image

screw on propane 31mbar (reverse thread btw you do up anti clockwise and undo / remove clockwise)

Image

(most pipe fitted appliences will accept both but ALWAYS check with the manufacturer or ratings plate or handbook before trying)

and others such as camping gaz and some other older cylinders use other odd threads and all sorts.....

eg

Image

this must be fitted with a jublie hose clip to the rubber inlet hose of the applience (which should be replaced every 5 years as the LPG attacks the rubber and sun light attacks the outer)

Now onto Convince....

Camping gaz... smaller ligher cylinders butane ONLY available across Europe popular choice by caravans and campers who go abroad a lot.... (price about £20 for 2.5 kg)

Calor Uk wide network (garages and industrial gas suppliers) usually about £20 for 6- 7kg

http://www.calor.co.uk/shop/gas-bottles.html

With calor you pay a deposit on the bottle on your first "hire"

http://www.calor.co.uk/help-and-advice/ ... nge-policy

but then you can change within their policy so can go up or down a bottle size for example above link

Then think LOCAL...

We have a BOC depot near us (well outside the distance a gas bottle could fly just..... ) :o

and they do the "local" brand of gas http://energas.co.uk/gases-industrial.html

who are much cheaper than the rest BUT they can only be replaced locally Ideal for the Home BBQ or heater but no good for a caravan if you run out mid holiday........

And Finally Refillable bottles which you DIY fill from any petrol station selling AUTOGAS which is cheaper if you use a lot and you fill it yourself ......

http://www.autogas.co.uk/alugas-cylinders.htm

http://www.gasrefill.com/So_easy_to_refill_.html

IIRC these need a pressure test every 10 years..

People look on these as dangerous but they have been in use in industry on forklift trucks for YEARS ok some go bang but like anything if care is taken they are safe.......

Hope that helps :)

Yorkshire Andy, "ok some go bang".

Scary, but made me laugh. I think I would stick with butane (paraffin?). Have just bought two gas heaters, but these seem to use little gas cylinders. Not sure what I would buy to need the larger bottles of gas, but it's good to have the info. Does anyone use these at home? Can they be used in a bugging in scenario and with what? I'm thinking indoor cooking here.
