What Preps are you doing this week

The overseas vacation is highly over rated IMHO. Yes the weather can be nice and the food interesting. However the hassle at the airport before you even get near to the plane, the confined space between seats on the aircraft, put me off although I will be spending two weeks in Malta this year with my DW. I would rather spend the money in the UK but the Rain phobia of the OH makes that a no no. I do not enjoy the hassle of getting to Malta but enjoy it when I am there. I really have not seen all this country has to offer. I have not seen Skara Brae in the Orkneys, or Loch Ness in scotland, I have never seen Hadrians Wall. Those are just a few.

Never been outside mainland UK, only been away at all for honeymoon (combined with visiting relatives in Scotland) and same again twice since the mid eighties, and I don't feel I've missed much

only been outside UK twice, once in the 60s to Brittany and in 1977 I went to visit relatives(now deceased) in Canada, far to much to see in this country, I haven't even got a passport.

I guessed you'd not travelled and experienced other cultures. You've hit retirement age why not book a week or three in the sun take a look at https://www.alpharooms.com/ prices to fit all budgets, won't cost you a lot if your on a tight budget; book in advance with Ryanair or Easyjet. If you just fancy a weekend break I recommend Budapest, wonderful city as is Barcelona, superb place and ideal for a weekend break. We aim to be out of the UK for six months of the year when my lass finally retires from nursing in 22 months


The UK has some beautiful spots but...so do so many other parts of the world.

sorry Rik, I prefer my own country, far too much to see here without going abroad, in any case I cant abide all those queues and hassle at airports, I don't like crowds, even travelling to the airport on the motorway would put my blood pressure up. why should I "experience" foreign cultures? mine is good enough for me, unlike some.

For the most part ditto but if had loads of money there are places and people I may want to go and see, and probably more than one or two I'd prefer to here full time both in and out of the UK

Lack of experiencing other cultures even if only on holidays will leave gaps in the way you socially interact with others, still its your very sad and great loss. I've had two periods of my life living overseas and loved every moment, opened my eyes to the way others think and certainly made me more aware of others.

I'll be looking for cheap flights for June, we fancy a long weekend somewhere...ain't retirement a real bitch lol.

I've had two periods of my life living overseas and loved every moment, opened my eyes to the way others think and certainly made me more aware of others.

Each to their own I suppose We have family and friends in many countries but have never been of the income stream to partake in the jetting around thing, an what are you on about experiencing different cultures? plenty of them are here anyway, Polish, Chinese, Romanian, Chavite, most of them are here in Plymouth and in the same street withing three doors an at school with my son My Dentist is Iranian an he's great, what tripe there's nothing wrong with my social interaction, so long as they speak my language I'll interact with anyone, I never did have the urge to do languages nor go to anyone else's country,and asides from recently learning how to say "Fcuk that" in Klingon and a few other foreign swear phrases, I'm just adverse to the expense and hassle (not to mention the wanton waste of resources to go and get burnt an eat foreign dishes) of long distance travel.

What hassle lol. Your not on an aircraft for hours on end unless you go long haul, line up at the airport? No big deal really, its only as big an issue as you make it. Budget is a big concern for many; we're very fortunate in that area in that we are now sort of 'comfortable,' mortgage free etc and can afford travel now my health is somewhat better and at least stable.

Do a costing on a weekend in....anywhere in the UK, Blackpool to London to Scotland, include travel and accommodation and its a sad fact that its so often cheaper to travel over to Europe. Our flights to Gran Canaria came in at a little over £200 for two of us and our self catering bungalow was £700 so @£900 for two of us to fly to an island off the coast of Africa is a good deal...we'd not get two weeks in London or Edinburgh for that.

I've been into 'survival' for four decades but keep free time for other things in your life or the old saying of 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' very poignant.
