A knife that you can carry without good reason (ie an EDC) needs to have under three inches of cutting edge (although most people think its three inches blade length) and be foldable without having to release any catch or lock.

Fixed blades of any size require 'Good Reason' and locking knives are classed in law as fixed blades.

This is in addition to laws about how your knife opens (no switch-blades, no butterfly knives, no gravity knives etc)

Also bear in mind that if you get searched or arrested even a legal knife could be classed as an Offensive Weapon.

Recommendations, well anything that isn't tacticool

Not to side track the thread but my Son has just come in and retrieved his throwing knives and discussing how to re touch the damaged end, I got out an old knife my father gave to me, a Solingen which I had damaged in my youth and reground, it has a wonderful scene embossed on one side of tents and a camp fire and In assume a couple of lads sat around it, so we're talking 60s and 70s here a knife like that was not uncommon for a boy to have or want with no malicious intent, carving tent pegs and the like and yes throwing at tree stumps/whatever, the world has changed I suppose, but is it too late? can we ever reverse the uneducated and gradual madness of our overly PC - health and safety mad - common sense and morally lacking world? the chaps in the shop which sells a marvelous selection of man ( and girl these days) toys always points out that most knife crime is done with cutlery pinched from the home or bought as cheaply as possible to throw out, indeed some of the most "useful" looking knives and machetes are produced and named after our country's head boy scout Bear Grylls, neither combat nor crime is their primary intention or purpose, the same of course can be said for civilian firearms (except for airsoft I suppose) hunting and sporting/target competition use, no one walks into a gunshop and asks for a shotgun saying can you chop it down for me I have to go next door to the bank and make a withdrawel ;)

So.... carrying a knife for legitimate purposes a bushcraft knife for example suitably packed deep in a bug out bag I would propose is in no way an offensive weapon, would take you an age to get out to defend yourself with, and if it takes Mr Policeman a similar amount of time to locate it, you would think common sense for the most part would be used?
Don't break the law on my ramblings, I certainly won't :D

If you are just wanting a knife you could go with one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorinox-Pion ... victorinox

It is an amazing UK legal carry knife. Even though it doesn't lock it's stiff when open so won't close too easily on you. It is well made and mine was sharp straight out of the box. If you are wanting a bit more than just a knife Victorinox do a wide range of knives on Amazon. Each to their own but I prefer their knives that are simple with just a few functions. Some of them are ridiculous to the point of being unwieldy.

A friend of mine bought me a Boker XS;

It holds a wicked edge, has a great grip and so far despite a ton of use is barely showing any signs of wear.
I also have a selection of other more specialist knives, like the easily concealable Gerber EAB;

I keep one of these in my med-kit, and a couple of others in various little pockets in different loadouts.

Glad to read you speak out against the misguided effort by government to restrict common sense liberties in the pursuit of security. Citizens must work to change onerous laws that presume negative motives simply due to the possession of tools useful for a myriad of good purposes. I am as vocal as one can be sensibly about the hypocricy of the ban it attitude here and in your home country, I think my attempts to offer a British perspective from a person with similar stance in these issues often gets misinterpreted as opposition to your point of view, I am a huge fan( if that is the right choice of words) of the American declaration of independence, and admire those of you who stand resolute to keeping number two intact as it was intended, I share news from the USA on a daily basis on how firearms and the open/concealed carry in particular save lives and deter crime.
I remain convinced that the UK asides from the two knee jerk bans following the massacres we had here, have the law right for here, much as our reputation of being a fair play, jolly good cricket and all that, is banded about, we have far too many sheep like morons, with little common sense, and less care for their fellow human being who suddenly given the sorts of freedoms you enjoy in the States would abuse it to intolerable levels, suffice to say as a shooter who enjoys the good clean family fun of the activity, no one is in danger from me or anyone else I know ( and we are talking nearer 200 than a handful) who owns a firearm, many more if you include those who have a liking for knives, for which the same thing (well almost goes) Our countries head scout as I keep saying endorses a whole range of sharp things which if carried openly would have any of us whisked off to the police station, the truth is 99% of folk who like knives, like them as tools, admire their craftmanship, or even beauty, and quite possibly don't even see them as weapons, like the other thread in the right circumstances anything is a weapon, yet up to and between those points it's just a tool ;)

these knife laws are principally aimed at the youth inner city gang brigade, we've had a few kids killed by other kids with a knife over the years mostly in London, but we've also had policemen go over the top and arresting old people who have a knife in the door pocket of the car for peeling an apple and such, I myself have an old boy scout type clasp knife with the steel point(for getting stones out of horses hoofs-originally) I use it for getting chippings out of the tread on my car tyres!
