Smoking/smokers

Post by the-gnole »

How many are still smoking even though they call themselves "Preppers".

I am coming up to my fourth anniversary of stopping after 30 years of "needing the weed".

I started at 14, just a crafty one now and then, I ended up on 20 a day, sometimes more than that.

We all know it makes sense to give up, both for our health, our wealth, but most importantly for those of us who are "married with children" (or single with children) the benefits our spouses and kids will get, and we will hopefully grow old and see them grow up and have kids of their own.

I was spending £5 a day on cigs, £35 a week, £140 a month, £1820 a year, that was 4 years ago, not even sure what they cost these days.

The secret of giving up, simple really, You have to want to give up, if you don't want to, you won't, no matter how much nagging others aim at you, you simply won't and will probably dig your heels in deeper.

£1820 a year buys a shed load of preps. probably 6 months of every day food.

I smoked on and off for 15 years ranging from 20 a day downwards with gaps of giving up in between. I finally gave up properly on new years day last year.

I agree with you, you truly have to want to give up to be able to actually succeed...

I have to admit to the odd Marlboro Light...I occasionally enjoy a ciggie with a drink, but I haven't had one for months.

I assume that many preppers still smoke - it's up to each individual how they spend their money. Not a big deal in my opinion.

Gnole, are you suggesting that folk who smoke shouldn't be allowed to call themselves preppers? Bit harsh mate!

Scoobie - you sound similar to me. I smoked on and off for 8 years, trying to give up a few times, until finally giving up for good in 2003. Haven't smoked a single thing since - if you don't count the large Cuban cigar I had in Estonia in 2007...

On a personal note, my mother-in-law is dying of cancer. She smoked for decades until giving up a couple of years ago. She got lung cancer last year, which has now spread to her brain. She's probably got weeks, maybe a month of so left. So that's made me, for the first time in my life, quite anti-smoking.

I went to Cuba a couple of times 10 years ago and always used to bring a load of Cohiba back. You could sell them for a fortune on fleabay but they stopped you from selling them on there quite a while back.

On the subject of smoking, I think everyone knows they are bad for you but it is up to the individual concerned. We all take risks with our lives to a greater or lesser degree every day so smoking is no different imo, you pays your money and takes your chances. Regarding the OP I think he was just saying how much more money you could spend on preps if you gave up smoking .....sounds like my wife talking ;)

They did  The factory workers used to get a weekly allowance which they used to save and sell to tourists.
