I prefer a good old fashioned Ridge tent, mine is a £25 2 man 35 year old well worn Blacks ridge tent.

I've still got a couple of Vango Force 10's, bomb proof but far too heavy for a bug out really.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnC8vnIcN4I I've got one of these and they weigh about the same as a bag of sugar, very very stable in high wind, very waterproof and is easy to pitch. Not cheap but they are a quality product.

Another supplier to look at (again not cheap) is
http://www.tarptent.com/ superb products which are very well made. A good chum of mine has http://www.tarptent.com/hogback.html weighs about 1.5k

I've carried my old ridge tent and a weeks supplies all over the more remoter parts of Dartmoor, dosent way that much and having a framed rucksack does help to spread the weight.

I'd guess your tent comes in between 4 and 5k minimum, small Force Ten comes in at about 7k and my old Blacks Mountain tent comes in at over 12k. The new modern tents give you a weight saving of between 3 and 10k which is a lot of weight to save whether young and fit or getting on a bit like you and I. Personally I'd rather save the weight and carry extra food or just travel lighter.

Thinking about this thread and I realise I'm a bit of a tent whore...got the blooming things all over the place and all shapes and sizes including Army 9x9 and 12x12

I'm a tent-a-phobe! Can't stand camping or sleeping bags  would do it if I had to but never by choice. Shame on me but being bent in half under canvas and no bathroom stops me every time. Have only managed 4 times in my life:

Girl guides- rained all night, tent leaked so ended up in storm hut on wooden floor. :?

First boyfriend - woke freezing cold and sleeping bag full of earwigs. Didn't see him much after that

In Ireland on stop off to cabin - woke to revolting stench, cow crapped right outside opening of tent and showers disgusting and filthy.

On an island on the Thames and this was the only one I enjoyed. :|

I've always fancied a yurt, they take camping to a whole new level, not sure how to transport it all tho!

Oh yes a yurt is the way to go, I would do that in a second, very civilised. :)

On the backs of two camels or three oxen.... Simples

We camp quite a lot, mainly on standard campsites ATM. The one we were on recently has Teepees as well as Yurts and a couple of Shepherd's Huts...All with wood-burners (we were over in the bring-your-own section :( )

I'll share this with you

I think I've got the early edition as a paperback (a lot of the text is familiar)
