Ok......

All the replies have been food for thought and has triggered me to think about the tag line of "Prepper Mentality"

Talk about an open ended subject.

You see? ..... We a chasing an ever changing thing. Don't get me wrong I am firmly in the belief that we are all heading in the right direction.

The thing is, the majority of preppers have this belief that something is going to go wrong. Call it an almost instinctual thing. The completely analytical part of me understands why that is. It is human nature and even more importantly.... history tells us that really bad things happen on a regular basis.

So that being so. We are doing what we need to do to prepare for "something going wrong". What is interesting is that what we are doing has been part of everyday live since the beginning of time. People stock up and prepare for hard times. Modern society has conspired to set an unrealistic expectation, that the world is a safe place where bad things don't happen. Thus we find the majority of our society being sheep.

Unfortunately there is no answer to the problem. There will be no moment of clarity where everyone will understand that the world is not a nice place. People will never in general believe a simple fact, that mother nature can be cruel.

So where does that leave us? We are the exception to the trends of our society. I guess we keep prepping.

modern life in the 21st Century seems to have bred a whole population of people who rely on the state for their welfare "from cradle to grave", when something bad happens its always someone else's job to look after their needs not themselves. the idea of having more than a few days food in the cupboard(when we have 24 hour supermarkets), a torch and some candles, and maybe a camping stove(even if its only to make a cup of tea on), is completely alien to them. unfortunately in a major catastrophe this kind of behaviour will lead to their demise(and very quickly).

That is why I have predicted a quick die-off.

yes, that's what I(and some others) are hoping for, but I don't suppose it will happen that way.

That does make me cringe when you say that!! I would only hope for a quick die off so that the suffering for them and even a lot of us depending on "what" the event is, to stop a long lingering painful existance. You sometimes sound like you relish the idea!! :x

There must be something wrong with me....... last time we had a power cut and a big area was out.. My sister looked me straight in the eyes squinting against the petzl headtorch and came out with the immortal line...

"Your enjoying this aren't you!?!

(the fact she was just out the shower and all of a sudden had no power to use the GHD's and her phone was almost flat might have had something to do with it..)

I am really sorry for all these facebook adicted people. what would happen if shtf with them? no possibility to write they just had dinner or been for shit, no possibility of posting picture from pub so 600 "friends" can start clicking likes on it, no possibility to feed virtual cows and beg for virtual nails to build virtual barn - what will happen to those poor people? imagine those disappointed faces, those eyes full of insanity due to lack of their favourite page, those nervous moves around wifi router, imagine those RIOTS around Internet Providers buildings. will they die of hunger? nah! will they die of thirst or cold? nah!!! they will die of lack of attention ;-) haha

sorry, you misunderstand me, people will die fairly quickly but the general die off thing from start to finish could take some time.

I am hoping that the suffering of other can be mitigated myself.

As you may gather from some of my posts, I am hoping that if the time comes. I will be able to mitigate some of the potential suffering.

I am still working on ideas of how that may be done though.

If I won BIG on the euro millions, i guess I would set up the foundations of an organization that would quickly deploy contact teams across the country to deliver information and guidance to communities as to how they can pull together to weather the crisis. Yes I know that was the job of the Civil Defense Corps in the old days. Yet they are no longer in existence and someone has to pick up the ball.

Yet again, what I may dream of doing and what will happen are twos different things.
