Looking at getting a fenix pd35, hopefully in the next few weeks, not 'that' cheap at around £55, but sodding bright, small enough to be used as a EDC, has six power levels and is waterproof down to around six feet or so.

Sounds interesting. How small is it. My EDC torch uses just one AA battery so you can gather, it's quite small which is great. It's drawbacks are that it only has a 3 hour battery life, having only one very bright setting. Good little totch for a tenner though and use it all the time as need it for work too

I've got an ultrafire little torch thingy which cost me £2.15 on Fleabay. Bargain! One battery. I also have a little cheap solar charger that charges two AAA batteries in a few hours. Maybe not fully charged, but it works. And if anything I have uses AA rather than AAA then I have a some spare rechargeable AAAs in AA adapter cases. Takes up hardly any room so I can justify it most of the time.

I have a few of the smaller LED torches packed into various bags / conpartments but my favourite is the maglite 4d which is currently on amazon at about 20 quid. When the batteries are in it really has some weight to it and it looks pretty imposing too so gives you that bit of confidence having with on you. Not the brightest torch by any means and it drills through batteries but I would recommend it to others!

The fenix is about 140 mm long, on turbo mode (850 lumens, if that helps) battery only last bout hour and quarter, but on low setting bout 29 hours, medium setting just under eight hours roughly. If you google it, loads of info and reviews etc.

I have a few of the smaller LED torches packed into various bags / conpartments but my favourite is the maglite 4d which is currently on amazon at about 20 quid. i like the 4d maglite... the 6d is a bit heavy and clumsy to err swing about in a hallway or landing....

there are several LED upgrade kits on the likes of ebay and amazon

Yeah the LED kits for these are undoubtedly better.. but I actually quite like having a 'proper' bulb / torch too. Not enitirely sure why!

Maldini, i know what you mean, there is something reassuring about an older design of light, i.e old style bulb, i have two Tilley lamps, that i love two take camping and have them fired up,providing heat as well as light, i keep plenty of fuel and spare mantles for them, as a prepper should but i suppose you cant beat the brightness and battery saving of a modern LED.

I know - bit silly on paper but does feel a bit more reassuring definitely. I do have various smaller LEDs and will be buying an LED headtorch when I get chance this week to spread my bets a bit more!
