I'm guessing your referring to:

"Rodney Knowles, 61, walks with the aid of a stick and had used the Swiss Army knife to cut up fruit on picnics with his wife." And "Defence solicitor Jolyon Tuck said Knowles, who is a carer for his wife, had used the knife to cut up fruit on picnics with his wife. He accepts it was in his car and the law is very clear,' he said. He admits possession of it and he had no good reason for having it."

Pretty harse and unreasonable eh? That is until you read the police account:

Because he pleaded guilty some background details to the case were not given in open court, the Crown Prosecution Service says.

Supt Meakin said in his statement: "At 11.45pm on February 23, police received a report that while Mr Knowles was in the Highweek Inn he had made an alleged threat that he was going to use a knife to harm someone.

"The police were advised that Mr Knowles had left the address in a vehicle.

"The vehicle was stopped a short while later by my police officers, where Mr Knowles was arrested for supplying a positive breath test. A further test at the police station proved he was under the legal drink drive limit."

"The vehicle was searched for a weapon and a Buck Whittaker lock knife was found. The knife is illegal and has a serrated edge."

Supt Meakin maintained it was not a Swiss Army-style knife, as stated in Knowles's court case by prosecutor Philip Sewell.

Is a none locking serrated legal??

I've been using my Gerber suspension at work for a while now and can't see it been a issue to my trade (production opp at a timber yard plus shift maintenance / first aider )

I'm often torn after work if I go shopping do I take it out of the belt loop case and lock it in the boot if I then Go home forget about it then go out socially in the car I'm illegal then or leave it on my belt and when I get changed when I get home in a cumped heap on the bathroom floor ready for work the next morning
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

As long as it's under the length and not locking, I don't believe serrations make a difference.

We do have to fight these OTT laws just as with the gun bans, they are knee jerk reactions where the inanimate object has become the focus of the issue rather than the mental stability, or bad intent of the person carrying the tool, we will never really know if this case was any more than an off the cuff comment made by an otherwise good man pissed off by or wound up by another, personally I'd caution him to not let idiots get to him and watch what he says and does if they do, there may have been no way of avoiding this going to court once the person called the police into the picture, but it looks like a waste of time and money to me, education is another issue, it is a worry how people especially the young are prepared to use weapons or carry them in self defense, but bans won't stop this, harsh punishment of criminals and better education of us all by us all will definitely help, it is up to us the public to be vocal in order to attempt to keep the lawmaker's perspective sensible or in many cases loosen the grip as they have done with home self defense.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

The local chavs up here have learned very easily how to get past the knife ban, they all ride BMX or mountain bikes and so they LEGALLY carry tools like 6 inch screwdrivers ( knives) Allen key sets ( Knuckle dusters). ALL of the prohibitions on knives and guns had nothing to do with fighting crime and everything to do with disarming a compliant general public. I think I read that after the last gun ban in 1996 gun crime actually rose by over 50% in the following five years primarily because only the good honest law abiding citizens gave up their guns.

( Mods, not sure if this sort of stuff is permitted, apologies in advance if I busted the rules)

I'm not sure that's accurate TBH, like the previous one the ones who didn't throw their toys from the plan carried on shooting what they are still allowed to and continue to do so, though people do come and go with shooting, this is because you have to do it to keep your license, even a busy life for a year or two and you have to give it up  the good law abiding citizens with guns even then were not allowed to have them in mainland UK for defensive purposes, so that is a mystery to me, in the USA however absolutely! every gun control action we hear about sparks more, not less crime, likewise where concealed/open carry is allowed, gun crime is at it's lowest, wouldn't work here - it's not part of our culture, as you demonstrated our PHu%$£wets cannot be trusted with screwdrivers and allen keys

If you are just wanting a knife you could go with one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorinox-Pion ... victorinox

It is an amazing UK legal carry knife. Even though it doesn't lock it's stiff when open so won't close too easily on you. It is well made and mine was sharp straight out of the box. If you are wanting a bit more than just a knife Victorinox do a wide range of knives on Amazon. Each to their own but I prefer their knives that are simple with just a few functions. Some of them are ridiculous to the point of being unwieldy.

Qr
Trying to find out if the Victorinox Swiss Army Swisschamp Knife Black is legal to carry. Can't find details of blade/cutting edge length, although I don't think it's a locking knife. Want to buy one now as a Christmas (surreptitious prepping ;)) gift for my husband, who is always taking screwdrivers, etc, out of my coveted toolbox and I never see them again. If he has this one item with him when he visits property, he can sort out minor problems without having to come home and raid my toolbox. He has two gigantic toolboxes in the garage, but the problem is he stuff out, but he never puts it back and then, if he hasn't already ruined the screwdrivers stirring paint, they get rusted from neglect :(. I want one too, but they're not cheap. I might content myself with a keyring version for now :). What do you think?
