Hi I have just purchased a powermonkey solar charger off a well know auction site for £18 + Postage.
Is this a good piece of kit to have and useful?
I am gradually putting a BO bag togeather, I am looking at Gerber or leatherman multi tools, I believe that the wave has a locking blade so it restricted by UK Knife laws any thoughts from any of the more knowledgeable members.
Cheers,
Scopemark

Hi, I don't have experience of these but curious to learn how you get on with it.
Assume it's one of these (the few reviews seem favouable) -

Personally not convinced I need one in my arsenal; for me the risk of battery failure isn't that much of a concern. Having said that I do see the benefit.
I look forward to your update / any one else's experience.

Re: Powermoney Solar Charger
Hi Scopemark. I bought a powermonkey explorer a few years ago. I used it a few times over the summer then put it in my emergency box for the winter. However, when I went to use it the following summer, it would not take or hold a charge. I contacted powertraveller, the company that makes them and was told that because I had let the battery run down it was now useless and I would have to purchase a new unit as the battery was non-replaceable. Well, me being me told them where to go lol I opened the unit to see which kind of battery it was and ordered a new one off of ebay. Although the original was 'welded' to the contacts i managed to macgyver the new one into place and hey presto, it worked again! So, although they are handy (I have the solar panel with mine also) don't let the battery run down to the point it won't charge! Hope this helps!

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Once the SHTF thousands of other people are gonna want the same as you. What do you think your chances are of getting it?.......

I picked this up last year ..... http://f1store.formula1.com/stores/f1/p ... pid=117399
Pirelli solar backpack, comes with charger and an adapter for about 10/12 devices, take it with me when I'm out hill walking or out on my motorbike.
works great on a good sunny day or even an overcast day it takes from 2 -4 hours to charge my phone or GPS from dead to 100%
they retail for £100 now (it was £150 when I got it) but I never paid that, I got mine new with tags from a well known auction site for £20 ....... dont know how I've gone for so long without this piece of equipment.
It's really well made and a top quality product compared to most of the trash you get from china on said well known auction site.
