Prepsteading tool box

Post by ForgeCorvus »

I just thought I should start a discussion on tools, after all we chat about canners, boots and Bug-Out gear.

I think a basic set of tools should always be part of your Shelter preps.
After all, you need to maintain what you have as well as repair whats left During & Post Event.

So, what tools would you say are essential, what would be nice to have and what isn't worth a carrot ?

I'll start off with:
Claw hammer.
Flat screwdriver
Pozidrive screwdriver
Prybar

Queries, Yays or Nays ?

I would suggest adding nails and screws of various sizes prob adjustable spanner, hack saw and wood saw not shtf tool kit more a general tool kit.

Shtf a sledge or bolt cutters could be beneficial you never know where you might need to get into your supplys wont last forever. An axe and bow saw equal fire wood.

Still considering do I want to survive the end of the world or deck chair on the front lawn with a cold beer?

Mole grips and plliers as well.

I was a manual worker (electrician) in my former life and as such along with being a keen DIYer I have no shortage of tools add to that axes and bow saws yes indeed, We have an archery tool kit now too, spare nocks, fletchings, glue and fletching jig, a portable, compound bow press, spare strings (Briggs will like this one) an Arrow sharpener yes like a big pencil sharpener ;) Shooting related tools are a new thing to us but slowly being added to.
DIY is a bit like prepping too in as much as you are being self-reliant, pretty much second nature to me, but for clues for a general kit, I wouldn't mind betting that like me many of us have a kitchen drawer full of the most commonly used tools so start there, and if you're bugging out think shelter building.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

So, besides fixings (I'd go for nails in 4 inch,1 1/2 and Felt. Screws in 4 inch decking, 2 inch #8 and 1 inch #6.... All Pozidrive) we have:

Claw hammer.
Flat screwdriver
Pozidrive screwdriver
Prybar
Adjustable Spanner
Hack saw
Wood saw (what type? Crosscut, Rip, Tenon ? Traditional or a modern Induction-hardened?)
Sledge hammer
Boltcroppers
Axe (size?.... Maybe a Maul ?)
Bowsaw (plus spare blades)
Molegrips
Pliers

The Kitchen Drawer ;)

In a recent conversation I described myself as "a tool-user", I might not be a craftsman but I know how to knock a nail in

All of the above most certainly. Add in a splitting maul. Brickworking tools, cold chisels and trowels. Spade, fork, shovel and pick.

With reference to wood saws even modern hard points have a lifespan which is in reality much shorter than a conventual wood saw as long as one has the ability and tools to sharpen it so I'd add a good stock of files to the list. Other than that I'd add an axe or two and something to drill holes preferably in a post event world human powered.
I have taken after my father who would very rarely throw tools away. As a result I've got loads of spanners and hammers and at last count over two dozen shovels .

Set of sweeps brushes. Rather timely thread-I have to get a new set. Bicycle repair tools i.e. allen keys, headset spanners, pump (dual head),crank puller and chain splitter. Also plenty of puncture repair patches and glue.

Good quality Spade, Fork, Dutch Hoe, Rake, pick Axe, Mattock, Bill Hook. In Fact you would need a Conestoga wagon to shift it all.Image

Suppose a tool kit would be very user and situation dependent I've got specific car tools for example ribe and torx sockets and bits spring compressors laptop diagnostic software and obd leads axle stands et all...

Take Jansmans bike tools list I wouldn't need a crank extractor or headset spanner nor a peddle spanner but I would possibly need a hollow tech II bb tensionion disc and tubeless tyre plug kit

For some strange reason some bike parts need a 9mm spanner (derailure bolts on basic shimano units)

If your bike has one add a spare mech hanger to your parts box

So before you rush out make a list of what you need and IMO buy the best tools you can cheap water pump pliers for example will ruin your day when they slip and squash your fingers cheap spanners stretch and round off bolts cheap screwdrivers round heads or slip and Kabab your hand.. Cheap Alan keys just round off..

BUT you can't go wrong with adding duct tape cable ties and a spray release oil to your tool box ;-)

I work as a shift maintenance fitter

Tools like

Draper expert / knipex
Irazola
Teng
Britool
Geodore
Facrom
Halfords pro

Are the usual brands I look for
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
