Staying healthy - a useful prep

Post by boisdevie »

I think that in the future our health services will be able to do less and less for us given the demands of an increasingly ageing and overweight population. My approach therefore is to try to be as independent as possible by keeping in good shape by playing 5-6 hours of hardcore badminton per week. Do you try to stay in shape?

I think the main point is to reduce the amount we rely on the state. The more self sufficient we are the better prepared we will be for any SHTF event. The state the NHS is in worries me along with the gradual privatization. Whether we are having to pay for private health care or whether we are still using a struggling NHS there are many things that we cannot do for ourselves. Having a FAK at home is one thing. Preforming operations on our loved ones is quite another. Modern medicine and surgery is a Marvellous and something we can't prep to replace. But by living a healthier and more active lifestyle we can reduce the risk of suffering from something that will take us to the NHS. It will also help reduce pressure on the NHS as people visiting the NHS due to problems caused by lifestyle choices is a big problem.

Being fit and active will also help you should you need to Bug Out or if you need to defend yourself or your family. I imagine staying healthy could be considered that hardest prep to do in some respects. Self motivation can be a hard thing to achieve.

Most of my life I have been overweight. But I realize how important staying healthy is. Which is why I have started eating better. I know money is tight for many people but there are recipes out there for healthy meals that are cheaper than a lot of the fast food that many people now eat. I have also joined the gym and started swimming 4/5 days a week. A couple of months ago I was 16 stone. I'm now just over 14 and a 1/2. With regards to prepping and also health and happiness in general it is definitely important to stay as healthy as our circumstances will allow.

Look online at slimming world sure, normal everyday food, just tweeks in the preparation, no funny weighing or measuring, no special foods required. I lost over 2 stone and my energy levels were amazing!

Well done Quercus-robur &Decaff! I agree that keeping as healthy as poss. is a vital prep. for all sorts of reasons, unfortunately it's not always that straight forward.

Life has sometimes a habit of getting back at us when we feel smug and illnesses do not confine themselves to the unfit, indeed auto-immune diseases are as likely in fit and healthy people, eg rheumatoid arthritis is more common in fit 30-40 year olds.

The best we can do is eat well, walk whenever possible, get sleep and hope that the thousands of viruses out there bypass us!

I eat a Keto diet. It has resolved many health problems for me. Its turned my life around from waiting to die to wanting to survive. I now no longer need bags of meds or inhalers. This is all from eating a clean keto diet.

Was reading something about Keto being a very good way of living for a prepper.

Another prepper talks about it here
